Le Pommier Wine Estate: A Winelands Gem Blending Heritage, Hospitality, and Award-Winning Wines

1.3k

Nestled along the iconic Helshoogte Pass between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, Le Pommier Wine Estate is making its mark as one of the Cape Winelands’ most inviting destinations. Combining rich historical roots, warm hospitality, and a family-owned wine range, the farm continues to attract local and international visitors seeking an authentic country escape.

The name Le Pommier—meaning “The Apple Tree” in French—honours the estate’s past as part of the historic Zorgvliet farm, once covered in apple orchards. Tracing its story back to 1692, Le Pommier was originally granted to Austrian soldier Casper Wilders by the Dutch East India Company. Today, a few of those original apple trees still stand as symbols of the estate’s heritage.

Since taking ownership in 2014, Johan and Melanie van Schalkwyk have transformed Le Pommier from a modest farm retreat into a full-service hospitality destination. With their hands-on approach and dedication to warm, personal service are reflected in every aspect of the business—from the food to the wine to the attentive staff, many of whom have been part of the team for decades. The estate has expanded its offering to include a rustic à la carte restaurant, cosy vineyard-facing accommodation, and a dedicated venue for weddings, conferences, and special occasions.

“Our goal has always been to preserve the authentic charm of the farm while enhancing the experience for our guests,” says co-owner Melanie van Schalkwyk. “We focus on heartfelt service, simple luxuries, and letting our wines and setting tell the story.”

Le Pommier Lodge features six luxury suites, seven comfortable country rooms, and two spacious self-catering units—ideal for families and leisure travellers alike. The on-site restaurant serves traditional Cape country cuisine, with roaring fireplaces in winter and terrace seating during the warmer months.

Le Pommier recently added a dedicated wedding and function venue to its portfolio. Designed to resemble a contemporary barn with floor-to-ceiling glass panels, the space offers panoramic vineyard views—making it ideal for weddings, corporate events, and private celebrations. Bespoke packages include catering, décor, and accommodation options, ensuring every occasion is memorable.

At the heart of Le Pommier’s offering is its family-owned wine range, crafted exclusively from grapes grown on the farm and their adjacent farm Summercourt. Signature wines include:

  • Jonathan’s Malbec – named after a bull that famously devoured the first Malbec harvest
  • Angle Peur Cabernet Franc – inspired by the historic “scary corner” of Banghoek
  • “Mac” Cabernet Franc & Malbec blend – a tribute to former owner Mac van der Merwe
  • Maraai Rosé – named in memory of Marietjie van der Merwe, known for her sunshine spirit
  • Summercourt Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc – crisp, elegant, and food-friendly

Guests can enjoy wine tastings, as well as food pairings and kid-friendly tasting experiences. The tasting room is open daily, excluding Christmas and New Year’s Day.

With its deep sense of place, authentic offerings, and welcoming atmosphere, Le Pommier Wine Estate invites visitors to slow down, savour the wine, and share in its story.
