WGRUV Dance Company Opens 2026 Season with JUXTAPOSE

525

Johannesburg-based WGRUV Dance Company will launch its 2026 season in April with the debut of a new production titled JUXTAPOSE. The contemporary ballet programme will open in Johannesburg before travelling to Gqeberha later in the month.

Performances will take place at the Roodepoort Theatre from 9 to 12 April 2026, followed by shows at the Mandela Bay Theatre Complex from 30 April to 2 May.

The company’s previous production, Art Effect, appeared at both venues in 2025 and received strong support from audiences in both cities. Two performers with local roots, Jenna Goves and Nicola Tolmay, will again appear on stage in Johannesburg.

A Contemporary Ballet About Human Tension

JUXTAPOSE places the human body at the centre of physical and emotional tension. Rooted in classical ballet yet shaped by contemporary movement, the programme explores themes of vulnerability, identity and resilience.

The evening opens with Human Exposure, choreographed by Holly Gruver. The work explores vulnerability and presence as movement responds directly to music.

Not Forgotten, created by Lex Gruver, reflects on unseen histories and the lasting emotional impact of oppressive policies. The choreography examines memory, loss and the quiet weight carried by those left behind.

In Rooms Rewired, Holly Gruver collaborates with dancer Vuyelwa Phota to explore identity and transformation through a process of learning and unlearning.

The programme concludes with Waxing Moon by international choreographer Robyn Mineko Williams. The work explores renewal and gradual growth, focusing on the process of change rather than a final outcome.

Across the four pieces, JUXTAPOSE uses contrast as its central language. Movement shifts between stillness and motion, tension and release, as the dancers embody both struggle and resilience.

Two Cities, Two Perspectives

In Johannesburg, a city known for its relentless pace, the production invites audiences to reconnect with the physical presence of live performance.

In Gqeberha, where the rhythm of coastal life encourages reflection, the performance explores themes of isolation and belonging through movement and shared experience.

The performances mark WGRUV’s second appearance at the Mandela Bay Theatre Complex, building on the company’s growing connection with Eastern Cape audiences.

The Vision Behind WGRUV

Founder and artistic director Holly Gruver established WGRUV Dance Company to present high-quality dance works by both South African and international choreographers.

Over the past two decades, she has created and staged original productions in South Africa and the United States. Lex Gruver supports the company as assistant director while also working in the energy development sector.

Robyn Mineko Williams, based in Chicago, brings an international dimension to the programme. Her work often explores themes of memory, lineage and the traces left by human relationships.

Upcoming WGRUV Performances in 2026

Following JUXTAPOSE, the company will present Highlights at the Roodepoort Theatre from 8 to 12 July before touring the programme to the Homecoming Centre in Cape Town from 26 to 29 August.

WGRUV will close the year with Angels In Africa, scheduled for November at the UJ Arts Centre and December at the Roodepoort Theatre, with additional performances at the Mandela Bay Theatre Complex expected in early December.

“As WGRUV, we present quality productions with works by local and international choreographers,” says Holly Gruver. “These three productions define our 2026 season as one line, three visions and infinite humanity.”
