The synergy between Showmax and the Joburg Film Festival has set a new benchmark for nurturing emerging talent in the African film industry. In a bold initiative that began two years ago, Showmax, in collaboration with the Joburg Film Festival, opened its doors to fresh, innovative storytelling by extending an open call for films from debut directors across Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa. The result of this collaboration will come to fruition at the upcoming festival, scheduled to run from 11-16 March 2025, where seven films will have their world premieres.
Two years and 296 submissions later, the event promises to showcase a dynamic array of voices that reflect the rich tapestry of experiences from the African continent. This year, festival-goers will witness a revolution in storytelling where new perspectives take the spotlight. As Tracy Ann van Rooyen, Showmax’s new executive head of content, states, “Showmax is committed to opening up the industry. Incredible work is continually underway to support new talent and foster fresh perspectives in storytelling.” This mission is underscored by the success of previous filmmakers, such as Mandla N and Kelsey Egan, whose works, produced with Showmax’s backing, won prestigious SAFTAs and captured audiences. The excitement is palpable as a fresh wave of storytellers gets ready to impress.
