The Gourmet Journey Aboard a Queen: Why Exceptional Dining Defines the Cunard Experience

From morning coats and cravats at breakfast to tailcoats and corseted gowns by evening, fashion aboard luxury cruises has evolved over the past century.

While styles may have changed, dining remains at the heart of every Cunard voyage.

A Legacy of Culinary Excellence

Founded in 1840, Cunard is one of the world’s oldest and most renowned cruise lines, celebrated for its legendary liners — including the Queen Mary and QE2. Today, its modern fleet includes Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth, and the newest addition, Queen Anne.

“Dining has always been an integral part of the Cunard voyage,” says Bob Dixon, Cunard Sales Director for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. “Whether it’s afternoon tea in the Queens Room or a gala dinner, dining on board is about more than food — it’s a sense of occasion.”

Cunard’s 185-year archive offers a glimpse into the evolution of cruise dining. “Dishes like Potage Longchamps or Calf’s Head Vinaigrette may seem dated, but classics such as Fillet of Sole Bonne Femme or Roast Lamb with Mint Sauce remain timeless,” Dixon adds.

Queen Anne Arrives in South Africa

South Africans can look forward to Queen Anne’s arrival in Cape Town on 30 January 2026, before she docks in Port Elizabeth on 2 February and Durban on 4 February.

The ship will continue to Réunion Island, Mauritius, and Sri Lanka as part of a 22-night voyage to Singapore, before sailing onward to Hong Kong and Sydney.

On board, guests can expect elegant fine dining, gastro pubs, and indulgent buffets designed to appeal to every palate.

Flavours from Around the World

“South African guests will feel at home in Sir Samuel’s Steakhouse, where premium cuts like Australian wagyu, Welsh organic lamb, and Irish short rib are served with flair — even down to selecting your preferred steak knife,” says Dixon.

Fans of Japanese cuisine can explore Aji Wa’s Chef’s Choice menu, paired with Cunard’s award-winning sake collection. For Mediterranean flavours, Tramonto offers dishes such as the signature Seafood Pot, while Aranya celebrates the vibrant spices of the Indian subcontinent with creations like Malabar Crab and Barbary Duck Seekh Kebab.

A Return of the Queen

Cunard’s flagship liner, Queen Mary 2, will also visit Cape Town in April 2026, giving travellers another chance to experience the world’s only true ocean liner in service today.

“What makes Cunard dining unique is our understanding of global tastes,” Dixon explains. “Guests can enjoy four distinct speciality dining venues — Mediterranean, Indian, Japanese, and classic steak and seafood — plus bespoke service in the Queens Grill, where diners can even enjoy tableside flambéing.”

Queen Mary 2 alone carries 35,000 bottles of wine, including rare vintages such as Petrus and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

Michelin-Starred Dining at Sea

Cunard’s dedication to fine dining continues with Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux, who will renew his residency aboard Queen Anne in 2026.

Roux, celebrated for his work at Le Gavroche in London, brings his signature artistry to sea through lectures, cooking demonstrations, and exclusive fine-dining events. His 2026 residencies will include 7-night Norwegian Fjords cruises in May and August, and a 12-night Norway & Northern Lights voyage in November.

Time-Honoured Traditions

The ritual of afternoon tea remains a Cunard hallmark. White-gloved waiters serve delicate sandwiches, exquisite pastries, and famous scones from silver teapots — one of the most photographed moments on board.

Guests can also enjoy lighter, wellness-focused dining at the Pavilion Wellness Café, where the menu features pressed juices, kombucha, and nourishing dishes such as Hummus with Spiced Chickpeas and Coconut Dhal.

A World-Class Experience for South Africans

Blending timeless tradition with contemporary innovation, Cunard continues to deliver unforgettable culinary journeys.

“For South Africans, cruising is the ultimate way to see the world — you unpack once, wake up somewhere new each day, and indulge in world-class cuisine along the way,” says Shaun McCarthy, Managing Director at Whitestar Cruise & Travel, Cunard’s South African representative.

“Queen Anne brings a blend of modern luxury and timeless elegance, while Queen Mary 2 remains an icon of classic ocean travel. South Africans can look forward to experiencing both in 2026.”
