TikTok’s new series shows how SA creators are building careers

2.4k

TikTok has launched the #AfricanAllStars series in partnership with Phil Mphela — a look into the lives of 11 South African creators who’ve turned content into careers.

Across eight short episodes (10–15 mins each), the series dives into their journeys, how they got started, the challenges they’ve faced, and what’s helped them grow on and off TikTok.

Hosted by entertainment commentator Phil Mphela, the lineup includes familiar faces like Dan Corder, DJ_DooWap, OverthinkingFootball, Nombulelo, GoPhari, Tadeus, Jared Fynn, Bheki Ndamase, Siyabunny, Life_with_lerato and Colourme__sim.

“On a continent bursting with creativity and innovation, we wanted to shine a spotlight on the incredible talent that is emerging from Africa on platforms like ours. The African All Stars Series will not only inspire aspiring creators but also provide valuable insights into the mechanics of content creation and digital storytelling through the lens of the creators themselves. This initiative is a testament to our continued commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive community where creativity knows no bounds,” expressed Boniswa Sidwaba, Head of Content Operations in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Hustle with heart

Youth unemployment in South Africa is high – but many young people are rewriting the script. Instead of waiting for traditional jobs, they’re building careers through content creation.

On TikTok, creators like Tadeus and life_with_lerato are great examples. Tadeus used the platform to break into entertainment and launch his music career. Lerato started by sharing 100 recipes during lockdown and ended up landing a collab with Gordon Ramsay.

With over a billion users globally, platform is changing how people learn, share, and earn. From food and fashion to film and DIY, creators are blending education with entertainment – and turning it into real opportunity.
