The Voortrekker Monument brings history to life

The Voortrekker Monument (VTM) in Pretoria is one of the most famous historical landmarks in South Africa.

It is the largest monument in Africa standing at an impressive 62 metres in height surrounded by a natural heritage site of 250 hectares.

The monument took ten years to build and was inaugurated on 16 December 1949. More than a quarter of a million people attended its unveiling. 

It is a declared national heritage site and a highlight on the international tourist calendar. This is Afrikaners’ cultural home where everyone is welcome and tells the story of the Afrikaners in Africa, from the Great Trek till today.

In 1835, thousands left the then-Cape Colony with all their belongings in search of freedom to create their own future.

The Voortrekker Monument is the symbolic embodiment and layout of their journey woven with idealism, courage, perseverance, ingenuity and hope … for freedom.

In 2022 a decision was made to modernise the well-known museum in the basement of the monument and with that, a new chapter in its history was written.

For the first time since 1949, the story of the Afrikaner in the Great Trek could not only be heard but experienced on all levels of the majestic monument.

The monument terrain is home to various exhibitions and one of the most impressive and exciting is the Toekomsbou Museum Theatre, the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. 

Aside from the many exhibitions the terrain also houses several monuments, memorials, statues and replicas from important heritage sites all over South Africa.

In 2024 the monument was voted the most popular monument in Pretoria by one of the most prestigious local newspapers and it is not difficult to understand why.

The monument is more than a heritage site but is a place where everyone can enjoy life and experience South Africa’s rich cultural heritage. The terrain is also a great place to relax and exercise on hiking or biking trails in the picturesque nature reserve.

Families can also enjoy various activities like horseback riding and guided tours.

The monument also offers a lot of opportunities for the youth of the country to experience history like never before with educational programmes and fun activities.
