As the countdown to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2025 intensifies, former Banyana Banyana midfielder Robyn Moodaly reflects on a historic moment in her career—the team’s triumphant win at the 2022 WAFCON.

Moodaly shared her insights and aspirations for the current squad in an exclusive interview with Showmax Premier League, encouraging the players to unite and embrace their role as champions.

For Moodaly, lifting the WAFCON trophy in 2022 remains an unparalleled achievement.

“It was honestly incredible,”she recalled. “Being part of that squad and making history for South Africa was something I’ll never forget. There was such a strong sense of unity, pride, and belief in the team. From the first game to the final whistle, you could feel how much it meant to everyone – the players, the staff, the supporters back home. It was emotional and special in every way,”she added.

Moodaly also regarded the victory as a pinnacle in her career. “Definitely one of the best, if not the best [moment of my career],”she said.

“Winning a continental title for your country doesn’t happen often, and to be part of the group that brought it home for the first time was something I’ll always be proud of. Personally, it was a huge highlight and a moment I’ll cherish forever.”

Turning her attention to the current challenges facing the Banyana Banyana as defending champions, Moodaly acknowledged the weight of expectations.

“It’s very tough. You’re playing against the best in Africa, and every match is physically and mentally demanding. The schedule is tight, there’s travel between games, and the pressure is always there to perform and to represent your country well. You have to stay focused and manage your recovery properly to be ready for each game,” she explained.

However, she viewed this pressure as an opportunity for the team to rise to the occasion. With the commencement of WAFCON just around the corner, the spotlight will shine brightly on Banyana Banyana, who are set to kick off their title defence against Ghana on 7 July. Under the guidance of coach Desiree Ellis, who led the team to their historic victory in 2022, the squad is viewed as strong contenders yet again.

Meanwhile, as excitement builds across the continent, Showmax Premier League is ready to deliver extensive coverage of the WAFCON tournament, following a compelling month where viewers can also enjoy the UEFA Women’s EUROs. The competition officially begins on 5 July, promising a vibrant showcase of women’s football talent from across Africa.
