As the 2025 Betway Premiership season kicks off this weekend, one question dominates South African football: Can anyone stop Mamelodi Sundowns?

Chasing an unprecedented ninth consecutive league title, the Brazilians appear more dominant than ever — and according to former Bafana Bafana defender Matthew Booth, they’re still the benchmark.

“I’m really excited about the upcoming season,” Booth told Showmax Premier League. “We’ve got a talented crop of youngsters and a pack of strong challengers emerging — especially Pirates, Stellenbosch, and Sekhukhune.”

Yet, Booth believes Sundowns remain in a league of their own, especially after their emphatic 4-0 MTN8 quarter-final win over Richards Bay.

“Yes, they’re in great shape — which doesn’t bode well for rivals or neutrals. Even with some uncertainty around two key players, Sundowns can still win the league by five to ten points.”

A Ninth Title? Booth Says Yes

When asked if Sundowns can extend their streak, Booth is confident:

“Absolutely. Their Club World Cup experience gave them even more insight and maturity — it strengthens their case for another title.”

Transfer Concerns? Not Just Yet

Although fans have noted a quieter transfer window, Booth remains unfazed.

“Basadien was a great signing at left back. The only concern is the right flank, especially if Khuliso Mudau leaves, with Zuko Mdunyelwa the only recognised defensive option.”

On potential exits:

“They have the depth, resources, and coaching staff to assimilate newcomers quickly. I don’t think they’ll struggle with consistency.”

Who Could Challenge the Champions?

Booth singles out Orlando Pirates as the most likely title contender.

“They’re looking really sharp — and their attack rivals Sundowns. The outliers will be Stellenbosch and Sekhukhune, who could surprise a few people.”

Sundowns kick off their campaign on Saturday, 9 August at 15:00 against Chippa United, live on Showmax Premier League and SuperSport.

Then comes a high-stakes MTN8 semi-final against Orlando Pirates.

“Without a doubt, it’s a title preview,” Booth says. “Revenge will be top of mind for Sundowns.
