South Africa’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign came to a disappointing end in Rabat on Sunday night, as Bafana Bafana fell 2–1 to Cameroon in their Last 16 clash at the Al Medina Stadium.
The defeat ends Bafana’s continental hopes, with focus now shifting firmly to the road toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Early setback puts pressure on Bafana
Cameroon took the lead in the 34th minute when defender Junior Tchamadeu reacted quickest inside the box and fired past the South African defence. Bafana responded with intent, pushing forward and creating promising openings, but lacked sharpness and composure in the final third.
Second-half blow
Just two minutes after the restart, Cameroon struck again. Christian Kofane doubled their advantage, leaving Hugo Broos’ side facing a steep challenge. The goal forced South Africa to chase the game and commit numbers forward.
Late fightback not enough
To their credit, Bafana showed resilience and belief. They pressed Cameroon for long spells and forced mistakes. Their persistence paid off in the 88th minute when Evidence Makgopa pulled one back, setting up a tense finish.
Despite the late surge, South Africa could not find the equaliser. Missed chances and acceptable margins ultimately defined the night.
Focus turns to World Cup qualifiers
Bafana Bafana are expected to return to their base in Marrakech on Monday, 5 January 2025, before travelling back to South Africa.
While their Afcon journey ends in disappointment, the squad now regroups with eyes firmly set on upcoming World Cup qualification fixtures.
The lesson is clear. The talent is there. The next chapter depends on turning promise into results.
