South African Shweshwe handbags are heading to Paris Fashion Week

3

From South Africa to Paris, Talitha Oosthuizen is taking one of Mzansi’s most recognisable fabrics onto the international fashion stage.

This September, handcrafted Shweshwe handbags from The Bushwhisper Shop will feature at Paris Fashion Week after the South African business was selected to collaborate with New Romantics Couture.

The handbags will be used as accessories during the fashion house’s Paris Fashion Week showcase, taking South African design and craftsmanship from local sewing rooms to an international runway.

At the centre of the story is entrepreneur and Mrs South Africa runner-up Talitha Oosthuizen, whose Bush Whisper brand focuses on African craftsmanship, local production and skills development.

Shweshwe takes to the Paris runway

Bush Whisper’s products are handcrafted locally using South African materials, with Shweshwe among the brand’s signature textiles.

The distinctive fabric brings colour and character to the handbags selected for the New Romantics Couture showcase.

The business is also Proudly South African accredited.

For Oosthuizen, however, the Paris appearance represents more than having a fashion accessory on an international runway.

It also puts the spotlight on the local craftsmanship and people involved in producing each piece.

Fashion with a purpose

Bush Whisper’s work extends beyond its products.

Through skills development initiatives, the business creates opportunities for women and young people to gain practical experience and develop skills that contribute towards greater economic independence.

Oosthuizen has also been involved in mentoring young women through internships, work experience and skills development.

The handbags heading to Paris therefore carry a story that started long before they reached the runway.

Behind each piece are the materials, skills and local talent involved in its creation.

From South African sewing rooms to Paris

The collaboration with New Romantics Couture gives that work an international platform.

From community sewing initiatives in South Africa to the catwalks of Paris, the Shweshwe handbags represent the journey of local creativity onto an international fashion stage.

For Bush Whisper, Paris might be the destination, but the story remains firmly rooted in South Africa, its craftsmanship and the women behind every stitch.
