Springboks Crush Italy 45-0 in Gqeberha: Historic Shutout and Tactical Mastery

The Springboks secured a dominant 45-0 victory over Italy in the Castle Lager Incoming Series held in Gqeberha on Saturday.

Head coach Rassie Erasmus, who described himself as “fairly happy” with the result, reflected on the match as an opportunity to refine the team’s strategies ahead of the upcoming season.

Historic Shutout for the Springboks

This comprehensive win marked a significant milestone, as it was the first time in over a decade that the Springboks had kept a major nation scoreless.

The last time they achieved this feat was in 2013, when they defeated Scotland 28-0 in Edinburgh.

The South African team executed their game plan with precision, scoring seven tries despite being reduced to 14 players for nearly an hour due to the sending-off of No 8 Jasper Wiese.

The Wiese Incident and Tactical Adjustments

The match took a turn when Wiese was dismissed for a headbutt, forcing the Springboks to rely heavily on their resilience and tactical adjustments.

Moments later, prop Wilco Louw was shown a yellow card for a dangerous tackle, leaving the Springboks with just 13 players on the field.

However, the team’s defensive effort remained resolute, a performance Erasmus described as “pretty cool.”

“Last week, we didn’t know a lot of the Italian players, so they were tough to analyse,” Erasmus said. “After one game, the older guys transferred knowledge to the younger players, helping them identify Italy’s weaknesses.”

Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Springboks kept Italy scoreless, winning 87-24 across both matches in the series, with 13 tries to Italy’s three. Erasmus was pleased with the outcome, particularly given Italy’s close contest with Ireland earlier in the year.

Strategic Innovations and Tactical Flexibility

The match also featured some innovative tactics from the Springboks, including a short kick-off designed to set up a scrum and a lineout-style maul lifted by a player.

Erasmus revealed that one of these strategies had been adapted from a local school team, showcasing the team’s blend of creativity and strategy.

“We tried a few things, and sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t,” Erasmus admitted. “But if they don’t work, you take it on the chin. We won’t be able to use them again for a few games, as people have now seen them.”

Optimism Ahead of Final Match

Erasmus also discussed the tactical substitution of Thomas du Toit with Ox Nche, emphasising the need for a specialist loosehead in such conditions.

As the Springboks prepare for their final match in the Castle Lager Incoming Series against Georgia at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday, the coach expressed optimism for the team’s future.
