The Western Cape has made history once again by clinching the inter-provincial SASA Primary School Athletics Championships for the second consecutive year. This remarkable feat highlights the unwavering commitment of local schools and the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) to prioritising school sport, showcasing the province’s dedication to nurturing athletic excellence among young learners.
The championships took place in Germiston, Gauteng, from 20 to 22 March 2025, where our talented primary school athletes demonstrated exceptional skill and determination in their respective events. The thrilling competition saw the Western Cape team bring home a staggering total of 88 medals, including 41 gold, 24 silver, and 23 bronze. Gauteng finished in second place, securing 78 medals, while North West took the third position with 28 medals.
This year’s achievement continues to build on the foundation laid by the WCED, which sponsored the provincial team’s participation for the second year in a row. By covering the costs associated with attendance, they have ensured that every talented school athlete can compete without financial burdens. This initiative is a crucial step toward making sports more accessible to all, fostering an environment where every young athlete can strive for excellence.
Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, extended his congratulations to the young athletes, commending their dedication and hard work. “We are so proud of these outstanding young athletes, who have shown dedication and commitment to developing their sporting skills,” he said. “With such talented stars in primary school, the future is bright for Western Cape sport!”
As the Western Cape looks to enhance access to school sport, efforts will be made to increase collaboration between various departments, with Minister Mackenzie emphasising that this is a joint priority. The focus on improving access promises to pave the way for even greater sporting achievements in the province, as young athletes are encouraged to pursue their passion for sport.
The overwhelming support from school staff, coaches, and parents has also played a pivotal role in the athletes’ success, enabling them to reach their goals and shine on the national stage. The sense of community and collective effort has been instrumental in cultivating a spirit of excellence that is now synonymous with Western Cape’s primary school athletics.
