Prince Albert’s journey to jazz: a film celebrating youth and legacy

66

Prince Albert, South Africa, 16 June 2025 – On this Youth Day, an inspiring new short film has been released, illuminating the potential that blossoms when the youth are equipped not just with a platform, but with a profound sense of purpose. Captured against the backdrop of the vibrant 2025 Journey to Jazz Festival, this five-minute film showcases how the small Karoo town of Prince Albert is nurturing big visions through the unifying forces of music, mentorship, and community spirit.

Produced by the Prince Albert Community Trust (PACT), the Journey to Jazz has blossomed into more than just a festival; it has become a movement that places young individuals at the forefront while weaving in the wisdom and resilience of their elders. This year’s film serves as a poignant celebration of that harmonious synergy.

One of the standout voices in the film is Melony Moos, a young woman whose journey with PACT began several years ago and continues to flourish with each festival. “I don’t know where my journey is going,” she reflects, “but it started in Prince Albert, with Journey to Jazz.” Her sentiments resonate deeply this year, taking on added significance following the recent passing of her beloved grandmother, Mamma Fanie Moos, who was a key figure in her life and featured prominently in the film. The video is dedicated to her memory, honouring a legacy of love and resilience that has shaped countless generations.

As articulated by a PACT spokesperson, “Youth Day isn’t just about young people. It’s about creating the conditions for all youth to thrive – today, tomorrow, and for generations to come. That means listening to our elders, learning from the past, and building something better together.” This ethos resonates throughout the film, reminding viewers of the vital role that intergenerational relationships play in fostering growth and community cohesion.

The production is set to the compelling sounds of renowned artists like Kesivan Naidoo, Kyle Shepherd, Siya Makuzeni, and Kujenga, layered with the dreams and aspirations of PACT youth. It serves as a heartfelt reminder that substantive change is catalysed when communities unite with a shared purpose – and when young individuals are empowered to carry the torch into the future.
