In a pulsating clash at FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon, Orlando Pirates surged back into contention for the Betway Premiership title, defeating Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in a match that showcased the tenacity and spirit of the Buccaneers.
This vital win was particularly sweet for Pirates, as it came just weeks after they suffered a staggering 4-1 defeat to the same adversaries.
The Buccaneers’ emphatic early performance proved critical in establishing a commanding lead. It was young prospect Relebohile Mofokeng who dazzled the home crowd, scoring twice within the first five minutes. The opening goal came after Evidence Makgopa displayed nimble footwork down the right flank, delivering a perfectly calibrated square pass to Mofokeng. The 22-year-old, showcasing maturity beyond his years, slotted the ball home from close range, igniting a passionate celebration amongst the fans.
Just 70 seconds later, Mofokeng struck again. This time, he capitalised on a moment of hesitation within the Sundowns’ defence, curling a stunning shot from the edge of the area. The ball kissed the inside of the post before finding the back of the net, leaving the visitors momentarily shell-shocked.
After the early setbacks, Mamelodi Sundowns, renowned for their resilience, slowly began to settle into the rhythm of the match. They nearly reduced the deficit in the 21st minute, with Grant Kekana’s header from Teboho Mokoena’s corner rattling the far post.
Continued pressure saw Lucas Ribeiro ignite hope with a near-miss from a free kick after the half-hour mark, while Peter Shalulile squandered a chance, blasting a volley over the crossbar just before the half-time whistle.
With the second half underway, Sundowns opted to replace Shalulile with Arthur Sales in an effort to turn the tide. Their persistence paid off in the 66th minute when Iqraam Rayners produced a pinpoint cross, allowing Khuliso Mudau to make a splendid run and stab the ball past Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, narrowing the scoreline to 2-1. This goal invigorated Sundowns’ urgency, as they intensified their search for an equaliser.
Nonetheless, despite dominating possession and pressing hard, the Sundowns’ attack found no way through the resolute Pirates defence. The Buccaneers stood firm, defending their precious lead and securing a victory that revitalised their league ambitions.
Both clubs will return to Premiership action in early April, with Sundowns set to host Stellenbosch FC on Saturday, 5 April, while the Buccaneers will make their way to Polokwane City the following day.
