No stopping Rohit Sharma after India’s Champions Trophy victory

In the aftermath of India’s exhilarating victory in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, captain Rohit Sharma extinguished swirling retirement rumours during a lively post-match press conference on Sunday.

The charismatic opener, who was named Player of the Match for his pivotal innings of 76 runs, expressed delight over his team’s triumph while addressing questions about his future in one-day international (ODI) cricket.

Following India’s successful chase of New Zealand’s total of 251/7, Sharma reaffirmed his commitment to the ODI format, stating: “One more thing, I’m not going to retire from this format, just to make sure no more rumours are going to get spread.”

At 37 years old, Sharma has already retired from T20 internationals after leading India to victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup last year.

But his focus now remains firmly on ODIs, extending a prolific career that began in 2007 and has seen him play 273 matches, amassing a remarkable 11,168 runs, including a staggering high score of 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014.

Reflecting on the team’s journey, Sharma noted that India’s recent success in international cricket has emerged from more than just raw talent.

“It shows a lot of quality in the team, a lot of depth, a lot of understanding within the group, a lot of enjoyment, a lot of excitement,” he explained at a press conference.

Sharma’s sentiments highlight the unity and spirit within the team, essential ingredients that have fostered their consistent performances across all major tournaments, including their stellar run in the ICC Champions Trophy and the T20 World Cup.

“There is too much pressure from the outside… there is so much speculation that happens,” he acknowledged. “The boys in the team have managed to put that aside and just focus on how to win games and how to enjoy the game.”

Proudly taking the helm of a team that has now claimed four ICC titles, Sharma humility spoke of his leadership experience: “I’m really, really proud being the captain of this team… to play the finals of all four trophies was really good and shows how consistent we are as a team.”
