The award-winning South African songstress Lira graced the Kippies stage at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival on Saturday, April 26. This marked her much-anticipated return to the city after a significant hiatus and was particularly poignant as it was her first major festival performance since suffering a stroke in 2022. The audience welcomed her with an overwhelming outpouring of love, making the evening unforgettable for both the artist and her fans.
Lira’s journey over the past few years has been nothing short of remarkable. The stroke that sidelined her left her grappling with the loss of basic communication skills—she could neither read, write, nor speak. However, she refused to let these challenges define her.
She told revellers: “I thought I’d have to give up singing, but I’ve been singing since last May, and being in front of the audience, I feel loved and supported. I really missed being on stage, and the audience had missed me”
As she took to the stage, the crowd erupted in chants of her name, showcasing the deep connection she maintains with her fans. Overcome with gratitude, Lira shook her head in disbelief at the heartfelt reception she received.
“Even if I had no words, unable to speak, I’d use gestures and act out what I was trying to say.”
Beyond her music, Lira has emerged as a beacon of hope for many, taking on the role of an inspirational speaker. Her experiences resonate with those facing similar hardships, and she uses her platform to uplift others. “Giving up was never on my plate,” she asserted, a testament to her steadfast determination and passion for her craft.
