Before the sun rises on Sunday, 9 March 2025, Cape Town will transform into a haven for cycling enthusiasts from all walks of life, gearing up for the much-anticipated 47th Cape Town Cycle Tour.

Known as the largest-timed bicycle race in the world, this prestigious event promises a day filled with camaraderie, competition, and breathtaking scenery.

The Cycle Tour will feature two iconic routes: the challenging 109km and a more accessible 42km ride, appealing to both seasoned cyclists and beginners alike. In a fresh addition this year, the Prelude Challenge will take place from Saturday, 22 February to Sunday, 2 March 2025, inviting cyclists to warm up their pedalling skills before the grand event.

What sets the Cape Town Cycle Tour apart is not just the thrill of crossing the finish line, but the outstanding organisational excellence and community spirit that pervades the event. With fully closed roads, passionate spectators, and stunning views of the Cape Peninsula, the Ride is an unforgettable experience for all participants.

The significance of this event goes beyond mere recreation. Each year, the Cape Town Cycle Tour injects approximately R500 million into the Western Cape’s economy. Through its charitable initiatives, it makes a profound impact, as seen in the R50 million that has been redistributed in the last five years. Partners, including the Pedal Power Association (PPA) and the Rotary Club of Claremont, are committed to cycling development, road safety, and social upliftment projects aimed at improving the lives of those in need.

Riders on the other hand must complete the formidable 109km course within seven hours, with the official closing time set at 17:00. The excitement kicks off early as Elite Men cyclists commence at 06:15, while the final group sets off at 08:57.

The electric atmosphere that envelops the route is infectious. Spectators gather at key viewing spots like Paradise Road, where they can witness the cyclists tackle the notorious “Whineberg” Hill, and Glencairn Beach, offering breathtaking coastal views. The Noordhoek Farm Village buzzes with energy, while Hout Bay’s Main Road and Suikerbossie herald high-octane moments before culminating in an exhilarating final sprint in Sea Point.

As the crowds’ cheer on the cyclists, the ‘gees’ will create a festive environment that celebrates the spirit of the event. Those planning to witness the action are reminded to embrace their role as responsible spectators by conserving water, refraining from smoking and respecting the beautiful surroundings.

This year’s Cycle Tour is not merely a race; it’s a celebration of cycling culture and a testament to Cape Town’s unparalleled natural beauty. Whether you’re cycling, supporting a friend, or simply enjoying the vibrant atmosphere, joining in on the festivities is sure to create lasting memories.
