Ford unveils new Tourneo Custom Active model catering to budget-conscious buyers

Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa is set to shake up the people-mover market with the introduction of the new Tourneo Custom Active model.

Designed to offer exceptional comfort, space, and versatility at a more accessible price point, the Active variant fills an important gap in the Tourneo Custom range, following the successful launch of the trend model last year.

According to Sunil Sewmohan, Executive Director of Product Marketing at Ford South Africa, the decision to introduce the Tourneo Custom Active stems from market feedback showing a need for a slightly lower specification model.

“The current Tourneo Custom Trend was launched last year and has been very well received by the market, but we saw that there is a gap for a slightly lower specification model at a more accessible price point for prospective customers,” he explained.

However, in pursuit of a lower price tag, certain ‘nice-to-have’ interior features have been removed. The most noticeable difference is the deletion of the privacy glass for the side and rear windows, now replaced with a light tint. In a thoughtful nod to passenger comfort, dual sliding side doors are fitted with pull-up blinds to maintain a level of privacy.

Moreover, while the Tourneo Custom Active is equipped with automatic climate control, it does not feature the dual-zone system present in the trend variant. The luxurious heated front seats, driver and passenger armrests, and a wireless charging pad have also been omitted to deliver a more cost-effective model.

Unmatched safety and technology

Despite these adjustments, the Active model does not compromise on safety or technological features. It includes a full suite of standard safety equipment, such as LED headlights, Electronic Stability Programme with Traction Control, ABS brakes, and Emergency Brake Assist, alongside a comprehensive Driver Assistance Pack that introduces amenities such as Intelligent Speed Assistance, Collision Mitigation System, and Hill Launch Assist.

Occupants can rest assured with front and side airbags for both the driver and passenger, as well as rear curtain airbags and ISOFIX points across the second and third row seats. Security features are robust, with keyless entry, a Thatcham Category 1 alarm system, and two-stage door unlocking enhancing peace of mind while on the road.

In keeping with modern demands, the Tourneo Custom Active sports an impressive digital dashboard that mirrors the trend model. A large 12-inch instrument cluster and 13-inch central touchscreen with Ford’s SYNC 4 infotainment system ensures connectivity, featuring wireless compatibility for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, alongside ample USB charging points for all passengers.

Under the hood, the Active is powered by the highly efficient 2.0-litre Single Turbo Eco Blue diesel engine, generating 100 kW of power and 360 Nm of torque. This powertrain is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, offering four selectable Drive Modes (Normal, Eco, Slippery, and Tow/Haul) to cater to various driving conditions and requirements.

Moreover, the Tourneo Custom range is adept at towing, rated for a braked trailer capacity of up to 2,500 kg, making it a reliable choice for both personal and commercial use.

Pricing for the new Tourneo Custom Active starts at R1,050,000, a competitive offering compared to the R1,076,000 for the Trend LWB Bus model. Ford South Africa’s commitment to providing quality, safety, and value is reinforced through this new vehicle.
