Facial fat – the unsung hero of your face

For years, fat has had a bad rep, like that one ex who just won’t stop popping up on your social media. But in the age of Ozempic face, we’ve all had to come to terms with a bitter truth. You might want to sit down for this: sometimes, fat is actually the hero we didn’t know we needed. It plays a crucial role in keeping your skin plump, elastic, and youthful. When the fat that cushions your face starts disappearing, things can go south (literally!). Skin shrinkage, sagging, and other dermatological changes may follow. And nobody signed up for that.

According to plasticsurgery.org, it’s time to stop treating “fat” like a dirty word. Reasonable amounts of fat are vital for a healthy body and balanced life. In fact, certain fats are essential sources of fatty acids that our bodies can’t produce on their own. Plus, fat helps us absorb those all-important fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, and E, so it’s basically a VIP nutrient transporter.

Now, if you lose facial fat, you also lose elasticity. “Due to the reduced levels of elastin and collagen in the absence of fat, facial skin may lose its ability to retract, resulting in a loss of structural integrity. This is what leads to the sudden onset of a sagging, tired, gaunt, and aged appearance,” explains Dr Judey Pretorius, founder of Biomedical Emporium.

But before you panic, know this: facial changes are most noticeable when weight loss happens rapidly. Dr Pretorius reassures us that when weight is lost gradually through a healthy lifestyle, the body has time to adjust, making the changes less dramatic. So, no need to start force-feeding yourself doughnuts in fear of losing your youthful glow just yet.
