The Springboks are gearing up for what promises to be an exhilarating international season, with coach Rassie Erasmus expressing palpable excitement following the successful conclusion of their second alignment camp in Cape Town on Friday.
As the team approaches their first match against the Barbarians next month, enthusiasm within the group is at an all-time high.
Held over two days, the camp featured a mixture of boardroom discussions aimed at refining tactics and optional gym sessions, allowing players to bolster their fitness levels. Notably, several overseas-based players participated virtually, ensuring a comprehensive exchange of ideas and strategies. Erasmus also highlighted the implementation of innovative Outfox virtual training sessions during the camp, designed to help players acclimatise to new game structures.
“We are fast approaching the international season. Although most players have substantial domestic commitments before our training camp in June, the feedback from both the first and the second alignment camps has been overwhelmingly positive,” Erasmus remarked. “We believe we are on the right track regarding preparations and planning for the upcoming season.”
With a focus on continuous improvement, Erasmus conveyed the commitment of the coaching staff to evolve their strategies to enhance team performance. “The coaches have been working tirelessly to improve our structures. It was gratifying to see the players respond positively to the changes we’ve implemented,” he added.
The anticipation of competitive international fixtures looms large, and Erasmus acknowledged the challenges ahead, while remaining optimistic about the squad’s readiness.
A notable highlight from the camp was the involvement of newcomers Vincent Tshituka, Ntokozo Makhaza, and Juarno Augustus, who joined the discussions from England. Erasmus commended their talent and eagerness to learn from more experienced teammates. “They are all very talented players, and it was evident how proud they were to have this opportunity to rub shoulders with a seasoned group,” he said. “The interactions between the newcomers and established players foster a culture of growth and support, vital for our collective ambitions.”
Looking forward, Erasmus is set to announce his squad for the June training camp within the coming weeks, marking the official start of preparations for the Barbarians match, the Castle Lager Incoming Series, the Castle Lager Rugby Championship, and the traditional year-end tour.
