The buzz of engines and the roar of enthusiasm filled Green Point as the 15th Cape Town Carnival took to the iconic Fan Walk this past weekend, bringing together a raucous blend of colour, culture, and creativity. The sound of roaring Harley-Davidson motorcycles greeted thousands of spectators as the opening act of the much-anticipated parade.
Eager Capetonians gathered to witness this spectacular event, which featured not only the vibrant costumes of community groups but also appearances from local heroes, including the City of Cape Town firefighters and the famous DHL Stormers rugby players. Each participant contributed to the vibrant tapestry of the carnival, which embodies the rich diversity that makes the Mother City unique.
This year’s theme, WowZA!, encapsulated the bold, vivacious spirit of Cape Town and South Africa.
Throughout the years, skilled artisans have dedicated countless hours to crafting fantastical floats that perfectly accompany the diverse array of performers. Among the highlights was the DHL Stormers’ float, themed Taking the Cape by Storm, which engaged the crowd with infectious energy and distinctly South African beats.
Rachel Jafta, Chairperson of the Cape Town Carnival Trust, noted the event’s evolution into an extraordinary South African experience. “What makes the Cape Town Carnival so special is how it has evolved into a truly South African spectacle, reflected in its music, dance, and breathtaking floats,” she said, adding that this year’s parade showcased the city’s iconic elements while spreading joy among attendees.
Not only does the Cape Town Carnival celebrate local talent, but it also fosters a spirit of unity and connectedness. Brazilian drumming sensation Erika Januza, the ‘Queen of the Drums’ at the Rio Carnival, was a special guest, embodying the universal themes of community and creativity.
The line-up of performers included YoungstaCPT captivating the crowd atop his Gatsby float, hip-hop star Bravo Le Roux making his debut in the parade, and the dazzling Paxton Fielies lighting up the atmosphere with her remarkable presence.
For many, the highlight of the parade was the topless firemen and law enforcement officers who allowed the public to rub baby oil on their abs and arms.
MMC for Safety and Security, JP Smith, highlighted the carnival’s role beyond entertainment. “Aside from creating jobs, boosting the economy, and being one of the eight signature events in our city, what the Cape Town Carnival does best is social cohesion.”
