BYD officially launches advanced electric vehicle models in South Africa

In a bold step towards sustainable mobility, BYD, the world’s foremost manufacturer of new-energy vehicles, has officially introduced three pioneering models—the BYD SHARK 6, BYD SEALION 6, and BYD SEALION 7—to the South African market.

This milestone underscores BYD’s commitment to innovation and the provision of advanced, eco-friendly solutions designed to meet the diverse demands of South African consumers.

With a robust offering of six models currently available in the South African market, BYD is poised for success. The compact and versatile BYD ATTO 3 debuted in 2023, followed by the dynamic BYD DOLPHIN hatchback and the stylish BYD SEAL sedan. The addition of the BYD SHARK 6 and BYD SEALION series completes BYD’s strategy for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) within the region.

The BYD SHARK 6, notable for being the brand’s first bakkie in South Africa, stands out with its advanced DMO Super Hybrid Off-road Platform. This cutting-edge technology combines robust off-road capabilities with SUV-esque comfort while achieving impressive energy efficiency.

Equipped with a dedicated rear-drive powertrain and a powerful 1.5T engine, the BYD SHARK 6 boasts over 430 horsepower, comparable to a traditional 4.0L V8, achieving 0 to 100 km/h in an exhilarating 5.7 seconds. Thanks to its intelligent electric All-Wheel Drive system, it adjusts torque distribution between wheels in milliseconds, ensuring optimal traction across varied terrains.

As a super plug-in hybrid, the BYD SHARK 6 offers a remarkable 670 km cruising range under WLTP conditions, with a pure electric endurance of 85 km. Its efficiency is further demonstrated by a fuel consumption rate of just 9.6L/100km, making it an ideal option for both city driving and long-distance ventures. Safety remains paramount; the vehicle integrates a high-strength steel frame with an ultra-high safety Blade Battery, elevating both structural integrity and safety standards.

Positioned as an optimal family SUV, the BYD SEALION 6 merges performance and fuel efficiency with intelligent features. Thanks to BYD’s Super DM-I technology, this model guarantees a seamless driving experience across various scenarios.

The all-wheel-drive variant accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds, while the front-wheel-drive model excels in fuel efficiency at 5.5L/100 km (WLTP). With a full tank, the SEALION 6 can achieve an impressive range of 1,080 km (FWD) and 870 km (AWD), ideal for everyday commuting or family road trips.

Enhanced by cutting-edge technology, it features a 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, smart voice control, and a head-up display that presents critical driving information on the windshield. This convergence of efficiency and intelligent connectivity repositions the BYD SEALION 6 as a leader in the family SUV market.

As BYD’s fourth pure electric offering, the SEALION 7 stands out as a sport-coupe SUV that unites sleek aesthetics with state-of-the-art electric vehicle technology. Its advanced e-motor technology positions it as a leading option in the electric vehicle sphere.

The SEALION 7 features an impressive rear motor capable of reaching speeds of up to 23,000 rpm, enabling stunning acceleration of just 4.5 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h for the Performance edition. With a substantial 82.56 kWh battery capacity and a WLTP range of 482 km, this model redefines user adaptability for daily needs.

With intelligent fast-charging capabilities, the SEALION 7’s battery can recharge from 20% to 80% in just 30 minutes. Additionally, the vehicle provides ample practicality, boasting an impressive 500L boot capacity and a high-tech dashboard complete with a rotating 15.6-inch screen compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Adding luxury to the driving experience are 12 Dynaudio speakers, promising an immersive auditory journey.
