Aspiring actress Reneiloe Mathebula redefines beauty standards

By Venecia Valentine

At just 15 years old, Reneiloe Mathebula stands as a beacon of inspiration, revealing how a label that once caused her pain has transformed her into a confident young woman determined to reshape societal beauty standards. The aspiring actress and model, who once endured bullying for being considered ‘plus-size’, has discovered her purpose through powerful self-acceptance and an unwavering spirit.

“I develop my strength and my light from the inside out,” Reneiloe expresses, echoing wisdom that belies her age. Yet, this positive outlook did not come without struggle. Bullied for her body shape, she recalls, “I was the big girl. I was often told that I could never be a model or be on TV because I am too fat.” Such comments inflicted deep emotional scars, leading her through a painful journey of self-doubt and trauma.

However, the turning point came when Reneiloe realised that her happiness depended entirely on her own self-perception. “I always did my best, but I soon realised that the most important thing I could do was to love myself the way I am. To be happy with the way God created me, and only after that did things begin to fall into place.” This self-love ignited a fire within her, helping her forge a path towards success.

Challenging beauty standards

Historically, the representation of diverse body shapes and sizes has been scant in media. Yet, as Reneiloe steps into the limelight, her emergence aligns with a broader cultural shift towards body positivity. “What was once recognised as a ‘flaw’ is the exact same feature that is propelling the young starlet to new heights,” observes those close to her.

In her quest to alter the narrative surrounding body image, Reneiloe proposes a new term: “curvy.” She argues, “The term ‘plus’ before the word ‘size’ suggests that you have additional size outside of the norm. When we use the term ‘curvy,’ it describes a body shape without discriminating.” It’s a refreshing perspective from a young artist intent on creating a more inclusive dialogue about beauty.

Stepping into the spotlight

Her hard work is beginning to bear fruit. After debuting as a commercial model in an international music video for local superstar Tyla, Reneiloe has secured opportunities that many can only dream of. Reflecting on her experience, she states, “It showed me that the world is indeed my playground.” Indeed, the challenges she faced now illuminate her path forward.

Reneiloe performed for agents from AMDA College in February and will also have the opportunity to participate in their Acting for Film and Television Masterclass.

She was also recently scouted at the International Arts Talent Showcase (IATS) by Voloney White, President of the Universal Actors Sessions, and will be attending their sessions in Los Angeles in June of this year.

Staying grounded and giving back

Despite the whirlwind of opportunities, Reneiloe remains grounded. “What keeps me focused and grounded is knowing that my story is reaching many who are going through the same thing,” she shares. Driven by empathy, she prioritises uplifting others while recognising that true worth comes from within. “Character and integrity cannot be bought. Therefore, I apply my time developing myself, my value, and my strengths.”

Reneiloe’s aspirations extend beyond acting; she envisions a future in which she can empower young girls facing similar struggles. “I want to grow more in character as a young girl. I want to be a vessel and a platform for young girls to learn from,” she explains. Moreover, she dreams of launching her own clothing brand, a venture that will celebrate and express self-worth.

A message to teens everywhere

As she concludes her heartfelt message, her words resonate with teenagers everywhere: “To all the teens out there that are being bullied, whatever the reason, stand your ground. You have so much self-worth. You are special and made in God’s image, so embrace that. You are a gift. Stand up for yourself and see how the world will be your playground.”
