For 22 years, the annual SPAR 2U Carols by Candlelight has been synonymous with festive joy, showcasing South Africa’s most beloved musicians and reigniting the spirit of community and togetherness through music. This cherished tradition, a partnership between Jacaranda FM and SPAR 2U, continued to shine on 5 December. The SunBet Arena at Time Square in Pretoria sparkled with holiday cheer as thousands enjoyed the live performance, while families from across the globe – tuning in online from the USA, UK, Canada, Zimbabwe, and beyond – joined in the festive celebration.
This year’s theme, “Home for Christmas”, beautifully encapsulated the season’s essence, celebrating the joy of being together and creating new memories through song. Managing Director of Jacaranda FM, Deirdre King said: “What a magical collaboration! Being transported this festive season by hearing familiar carols sung in a truly one-of-a-kind way, is such a special experience. As we celebrate 22 years of Jacaranda FM’s partnership with SPAR 2U, we honour the spirit of giving and the privilege to share the joy of Christmas through music, generosity and community. Through the Santa Shoebox initiative, we can bring Christmas cheer to children who deserve it most.”
The all-star lineup included sensational performances from Judith Sephuma and the Soweto Gospel Choir, Corlea, Craig Lucas, Jo Black, Demi Lee Moore, Elandré, Zolani Mahola, and many more.
In keeping with the charitable spirit, SPAR 2U and Jacaranda FM encouraged fans to contribute generously to the Santa Shoebox initiative. Proceeds from ticket sales and donations were designated for spreading joy to children across South Africa, ensuring that 22 children’s homes in six provinces felt the warmth of Christmas with new toys and love.
Maxine D’Amico, SPAR 2U Inland Advertising and Promotions Manager said: “This enchanting event doesn’t just bring families and friends together — it showcases the best of humanity.
“The generosity of our carollers helps us share the gift of Christmas with those who need it most.”
Zolani said: “It’s vital to consider where we can be of service – we must have a good time but also spread goodwill.”
Judith Sephuma expressed: “When you see the kids in the audience beaming and singing, you understand why Carols is such a special event.”
This year’s concert achieved remarkable success, raising R550 000 in donations from 12 000 carollers around the globe, reinforcing the significance of community spirit during the festive season.
