In a beautifully poignant moment that blended nostalgia with thrill, seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton got behind the wheel of a Ferrari F1 car for the first time, describing the experience as “one of the best feelings of my life.”
On Wednesday, the British driver took to the famed Fiorano track after inversive training at Ferrari’s Maranello headquarters, marking a significant chapter in an illustrious career that has spanned nearly two decades.
The atmosphere was electric as Hamilton donned the Scuderia’s iconic red, taking his maiden laps in an SF-23. Despite the foggy conditions and occasional rains, Hamilton showcased his finesse on the track.
He started the morning with an installation lap on wet tyres, a warm-up ahead of the full-throttle sequences to follow. Members of his family were present to witness this career milestone, alongside team principal Fred Vasseur and deputy Jerome d’Ambrosio, who watched closely as Hamilton adjusted to his new surroundings.
After a successful stint that clocked 30 laps – including flying laps and practice starts – Hamilton reflected on the emotional significance of the day.
“I’ve been lucky enough to have many firsts in my career, from the first test to the first race, podium, win and championship, so I wasn’t sure how many more firsts I had,” he said.
“But driving a Scuderia Ferrari HP car for the first time this morning was one of the best feelings of my life,” Hamilton reflected afterwards.
As Hamilton embarked on this new journey, he was not just a driver, but also a witness to the fervent passion that defines the Ferrari ethos.
“When I started the car up and drove through that garage door, I had the biggest smile on my face. It reminded me of the very first time I tested a Formula 1 car, it was such an exciting and special moment, and here I am, almost 20 years later, feeling those emotions all over again,” he explained.
“That passion runs through their veins, and you can’t help but be energised by it.”
Hamilton’s debut coincided with Charles Leclerc’s track exercises. The Monegasque driver also took to Fiorano that afternoon, completing 14 laps amid rainy spells, performing celebratory donuts that entertained the gathered fans. Leclerc expressed joy in witnessing Hamilton’s first laps, calling it a “special moment for the team.”
He eagerly anticipated returning to the track next week, driven by the shared excitement surrounding the upcoming season. Vasseur described the day as emotional, emphasising the importance of welcoming a new driver into the team.
“As is the case every year, the first time you go out on track is a bit like the first day back at school and quite an emotional feeling, especially today as it was Lewis’ first day as part of the team,” Vasseur said.
“Welcoming a new driver is always an important moment. Maybe today was less special for Charles, but it was good to see him fit, relaxed and keen to go racing again.”
However, the primary agenda for the season was clear: a concerted effort from both drivers to prepare for the challenges ahead, especially with the first proper test just a month away in Bahrain.
As Hamilton continues to integrate with his new team, the synergy established this week signals an exciting year ahead for the Scuderia. With the potent blend of veteran experience and fresh enthusiasm, the 2025 F1 season promises to be one of thrilling narratives and intense rivalries.
