February is known as the month of love for those who believe in it. It’s a time for sweet gestures, roses, hearts, cute and demure gifts, and other romantic gestures. However, there are some who have missed Cupid’s arrow and utterly despise the idea of Valentine’s Day. Inbound SA tugged at the heartstrings of SA celebrities to find out where their loyalties lie…

“Generally, I’m not considered a romantic person, and we don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day as a special occasion. However, if I could plan a romantic date, it would preferably be at a spot near the ocean, as we both love the ocean. My wife’s favourite bubbly on ice with some deliciously prepared small plated fine dining cuisine. No music, just the sound of the waves and the company of my best friend, my wife. That’s perfection. And if it happened to fall on a day when my favourite football team is playing, a reliable internet connection would be a bonus, so I could catch the game on my phone.”

Singer Jimmy Nevis
“Going to watch some live music – something intimate and low-key. I also have a soft spot for oysters and champagne. I want to feel buzzed but also calm and relaxed. I also enjoy creativity. While I’m not always into gifts, I appreciate something unique – doing something I’ve never done before, being vulnerable through art, music, poetry, or being part of a cool experience that took a lot of thought or effort. And, I must admit, I’m a sucker for a rooftop.”

“I think Valentine’s Day is an absolute waste of time. It’s a money-making scheme that people fall for, which is ridiculous. Love your person every day; you’re just helping the big corporations make more money.”

Singer Vicky Sampson
“I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day because, to be honest, I’ve never really understood the motive behind it. Perhaps it stems from the fact that I’ve spent most Valentine’s Days performing on stage, singing for people celebrating the day themselves. Instead, I’d rather be swept up in their celebrations and enjoy the vibe with them. Now, if Vin Diesel were to invite me on a date… that might be a very good reason to celebrate it, though.”

Actress and comedian, Shimmy Isaacs
“I’m a simple person. Good company, good food, and a great location with a beautiful view are all I need. I’m quite laid-back, you know. I don’t have high expectations, but a sunset yacht ride does sound nice. As I said, I’m quite simple.”

Media personality, comedian and actor, Dalin Oliver
“The simpler, the better. Nothing fancy – just quality time. Spending a full day with my wife, with no work or life distractions, is the best part. No singing (she’s a singer) and no comedy (I’m a comedian) – just a boy from Retreat and a girl from Lansdowne enjoying their second Valentine’s Day as a married couple.
We love eating together, so a variety of our favourite foods and treats is a must. A sunset and ocean vibe? Always a winner – making the most of a beautiful Cape Town summer evening. And to top it off, a lekker ’90s R&B playlist to keep things interesting.”
