Durban is set to welcome the Museum of Illusions Durban, with the globally recognised attraction opening at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping on 25 April 2026.
The new venue brings a mix of science, art and interactive entertainment to KwaZulu-Natal, expanding the brand’s presence in South Africa.
Global attraction expands to Durban
The Museum of Illusions has become a popular experience worldwide, with locations in cities such as Madrid, Paris, Amsterdam, New York and Dubai.
The Durban opening follows successful launches in Johannesburg and Cape Town, further strengthening South Africa’s position in the brand’s global network.
Originally founded in Zagreb, Croatia in 2015, the museum has attracted millions of visitors with its interactive exhibits and perception-based installations.

Visitors can expect a fully immersive experience designed to challenge perception and encourage interaction.

Each installation is designed to create visual illusions and interactive moments that appeal to both adults and children.

A new kind of museum experience
According to Mark Collie, Durban was a natural next step for the brand.
“Durban is a city known for its energy, creativity and vibrant culture, which makes it the perfect place for the next Museum of Illusions. After the response we’ve seen in Johannesburg and Cape Town, we’re excited to bring this experience to KwaZulu-Natal,” he says.
The museum follows an “edutainment” model, combining learning with interactive play to create a space that is both engaging and educational.
Opening hours and ticket information
The Museum of Illusions Durban will be open seven days a week:
- Monday to Thursday: 9am to 8pm
- Friday and Saturday: 9am to 10pm
- Sunday and public holidays: 9am to 7pm
Tickets will be available online and at the door, although advance booking is recommended.
