From Hillcrest to London: Musawenkosi Mosikili Takes His Winning Coffee Story Global

Customers are visiting the Starbucks Hillcrest store with their families for more than coffee. They want to meet Musawenkosi Mosikili, the barista crowned Starbucks South Africa’s 2026 National Champion.

The store opened a year ago and has been filled with celebration since Mosikili won the title at the Starbucks Reserve in Melrose Arch.

The National Final took place from 10 to 12 June.

Mosikili Will Represent South Africa in London

Mosikili will represent South Africa at the Starbucks EMEA Championship in London.

The competition runs from 16 to 18 September at the EMEA Support Centre in Chiswick.

His international trip begins on 11 September alongside fellow finalists.

The group will visit Amsterdam from 13 to 15 September to tour the Starbucks EMEA Coffee Roasting Plant and learn about ethical sourcing.

Finding Confidence Through Coffee

Mosikili joined Starbucks in 2023 while still building his confidence in English.

For him, winning the national title means more than receiving a trophy. His work centres on connecting with people.

“Some of the best moments we get to experience in life are when we feel seen, heard and inspired,” he says. “Through each cup I craft, I have a moment of connection.”

A Winning Drink Inspired by His Mother

Mosikili created the Caramel Comfort Cold Brew as a tribute to his mother.

The drink combines chocolate sauce, caramel drizzle and Starbucks signature cold brew. These elements represent his mother’s strength and the foundation she gave her family.

Ice measured to Starbucks standards represents her ability to keep the family grounded during difficult times.

Oat milk cold foam and white chocolate add sweetness, reflecting her nurturing nature.

“This beverage is basically a picture of my mom,” Mosikili says. “I can’t wait to show the whole world the inspiration behind this South African Champion.”

Small Choices Support Sustainability

Sustainability also forms part of Mosikili’s work at Starbucks.

He encourages customers to use reusable cups and believes small choices make a meaningful difference.

His Village Helped Him Succeed

Mosikili credits the people around him for helping him reach the national stage.

His support system includes fellow champions Teddy Nzama and Phuti Mmotla, former National Champion Kabelo Jori and his mentor, Ishan Natalie, affectionately known as Mr Miyagi.

“In my culture, it takes a village to raise a child. My village showed up for me,” he says.

Taking Ubuntu to the International Stage

Mosikili hopes to carry the support of his community and the spirit of Ubuntu with him when he competes in London.

“Carrying the flag for South Africa and representing the spirit of Ubuntu is a profound milestone for me,” he says.

His message to other Starbucks partners is direct: “Why not? Why not you? Why not now?”

For Mosikili, winning the national title marks the start of a new chapter.

“I have always wanted to share my story with the world,” he says. “I just did not think it would be so soon.”
