Despicable Me 4, the highly anticipated continuation of the beloved franchise, has finally hit theatres after a seven-year hiatus and it was absolutely worth the wait. This latest instalment brings back Gru, the world’s favourite supervillain-turned-Anti-Villain League agent, for an exciting and hilariously entertaining adventure.
Following the massive success of Illumination’s Minions: The Rise of Gru in 2022, which garnered almost $1 billion worldwide, Despicable Me 4 promises to keep the momentum going as the biggest global animated franchise in history. In this new chapter, Gru (voiced by the always brilliant Steve Carell) and Lucy (Kristen Wiig) are back along with their charming daughters – Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (Madison Polan) – and a delightful new addition to the family, Gru Jr., whose antics had the whole theatre in stitches.
This time around, Gru faces a new nemesis, the flamboyant Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina (Sofía Vergara). The family is forced to go on the run, taking on new identities in the picturesque town of Mayflower. The plot is packed with non-stop action and the signature humour that has made this franchise a favourite for all ages.
The direction by Chris Renaud and the production by Chris Meledandri and Brett Hoffman ensure that the film is as polished and engaging as ever. The screenplay, written by Mike White and Ken Daurio, is sharp and full of heart, capturing the essence of what makes these characters so beloved. The original score by Heitor Pereira, along with songs by Pharrell Williams, perfectly complements the film’s vibrant energy.
Directed with finesse and packed with non-stop action and humour, Despicable Me 4 is a cinematic delight that ensures a captivating story appealing to audiences of all ages. The new characters voiced by a stellar cast and the return of familiar faces make this film a joyous experience. The kids’ laughter in the theatre was a testament to the film’s success in delivering fun and entertainment. Despicable Me 4, showing from 28 June 2024, is a must-watch for fans of the franchise.
