Lando Norris Crowned World Champion

Lando Norris clinched his first Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship on Sunday after securing a composed third-place finish in a tense, title-deciding Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Podium finish seals the title

The Briton’s podium, behind race winner Max Verstappen and McLaren team mate Oscar Piastri, was enough to seal the 2025 crown by a narrow two-point margin.

Norris lined up second on the grid at Yas Marina, sandwiched between Verstappen and Piastri, fully aware that a top-three finish would guarantee the championship regardless of his rivals’ results. However, the race quickly tightened.

Early pressure and mounting threats

A bold early move from Piastri dropped Norris to third on the opening lap, setting up a pressure-filled 58-lap contest.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc launched several attacks, while a tricky stint in traffic after Norris’s first stop further complicated McLaren’s strategy. Later, a wheel-to-wheel exchange with Yuki Tsunoda’s Red Bull added another layer of jeopardy to the title equation.

Composure under pressure

Despite the mounting threats, Norris absorbed every challenge to hold firm in third, while Verstappen and Piastri, both delivering faultless drives, controlled the race up front.

With Verstappen’s victory cutting the points gap by ten, Norris’s podium proved just enough to keep him ahead in the final standings. Piastri ended the season 11 points behind his team mate.

Final classification

Leclerc finished fourth, seven seconds off Norris, followed by George Russell’s Mercedes and Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin. Esteban Ocon led the chasing pack of midfield runners, with Lewis Hamilton completing the top nine after a combative late battle.

A historic season for McLaren

Norris’s measured drive capped a landmark season, delivering McLaren their first drivers’ title since 2008.
