Kurt Schoonraad brings Funny Side Up to Johannesburg for one night only

Jozi, Kurt Schoonraad is coming back.

Following recent performances in Cape Town and Gqeberha, one of South Africa’s most loved comedians is bringing his latest one-man show, Funny Side Up, to Johannesburg for one night only.

Schoonraad will take to the stage at The Capital Empire in Sandton on Friday, 11 September.

The show finds the funny side of the everyday things South Africans know well: family, relationships, getting older, social habits, frustrations and the general chaos of life.

Schoonraad has built his career around observational comedy and turning ordinary experiences into stories audiences recognise themselves in.

“Funny Side Up is really about holding onto your sense of humour no matter what life throws at you,” says Schoonraad. “Sometimes you just need to forget your problems for a while, have a laugh and enjoy yourself.”

Decades of South African comedy

Funny Side Up is the latest chapter in a comedy career spanning decades.

Born in District Six and raised in Mitchells Plain, Schoonraad has built a career across stand-up comedy, television, film and theatre.

His South African perspective has remained a defining part of his comedy throughout that time.

He has also shared the stage with international comedians including John Cleese, Russell Peters and Pauly Shore.

In 1997, Schoonraad founded the Cape Town Comedy Club, which went on to receive international recognition as one of the Top 10 Comedy Clubs in the world.

Decades into his career, Schoonraad remains focused on what he enjoys most: getting people together, stepping up to the microphone and giving them a reason to laugh.
