Inside Koek Season 2: 12 Behind-the-Scenes Facts About the Hit Crime Comedy

The second season of Koek is officially underway, delivering more twists, new villains and the dark humour that made the first season a fan favourite.

After surviving Adrian’s betrayal and a terrifying encounter with a kidney-harvesting syndicate, Christelle is no longer the same person. Meanwhile, Moekie is preparing her return, while a colourful cast of new criminals threatens to turn the underworld upside down.

Here are 12 behind-the-scenes facts about the making of Season 2.

1. The Filming and Premiere Dates Match Perfectly

Production on Season 2 began on 9 June 2025.

The first episodes premiered exactly one year later on 9 June 2026.

2. The Cast Is Larger Than Ever

Season 2 was filmed over 48 shooting days and features an impressive 216 characters across the 10-episode season.

3. Cape Town Returns as a Key Character

Filming once again took place across Cape Town.

Bellville’s Lush strip club was used as the exterior for Koeksusters, while Sea Point’s Legs Lounge doubled as the venue’s interior.

4. Eva du Preez Joins the Creative Team

Award-winning filmmaker Eva du Preez joined the production as co-director and editor.

She is best known for her directorial work on Wyfie.

5. It Isn’t Their First Collaboration

Du Preez and Christiaan Olwagen previously worked together on the kykNET crime drama Die Oord.

Olwagen wrote the series while Du Preez directed.

6. Sandra Prinsloo and Olwagen Share SAFTA Success

Before Koek, Olwagen and Sandra Prinsloo worked together on the film A Kind of Madness.

Both received SAFTA recognition for the project, with Olwagen winning for his screenplay and Prinsloo for her performance.

7. Loki Rothman Returns for the Soundtrack

Musician Loki Rothman is back to create the soundtrack after earning a SAFTA nomination for Season 1.

New tracks include:

• Tokyo Drift in Bellville
• Tiete en Tjorre
• TT Gang

According to Du Preez, Rothman’s music perfectly captures the unique tone of the series.

8. The Rain Became Part of the Story

Cape Town’s unpredictable weather became an unexpected production asset.

Rather than fighting the rain, the team incorporated it into the show’s visual style, with umbrellas regularly appearing both on set and on screen.

“Instead of constantly fighting the weather, we simply made it part of the world of Koek,” says Du Preez.

9. Frank Opperman Calls Tjoppie His Biggest Villain

Veteran actor Frank Opperman plays car-jacking kingpin Thinus “Tjoppie” Terreblanche.

Opperman has described the role as possibly the biggest villain he has portrayed in his career.

He also admitted to feeling slightly intimidated working opposite Sandra Prinsloo for the first time.

10. Veronika Has Secrets

Played by Leandie du Randt, Veronika initially appears to be Tjoppie’s glamorous sixth wife.

However, viewers are warned not to underestimate her, as there is much more to the character than first meets the eye.

11. Season 1 Was an Awards Favourite

The first season of Koek collected four Silwerskerm Awards.

Among the winners were:

• Cindy Swanepoel – Best Actress in a Drama
• Jacques Bessenger – Best Actor in a Drama
• Sandra Prinsloo – Supporting Acting Award
• Dawid Minnaar – Supporting Acting Award

12. Koek Earned International Recognition

Last year, Koek received an International Emmy nomination, helping South Africa achieve a record number of International Emmy nominations in a single year.

The show joined acclaimed South African productions including Catch Me a Killer, Chasing the Sun and School Ties on the international stage.
