The 6 best reasons South Africans have gotten into shape

632

Let’s face it, being a South African is an extreme sport at the best of times. We probably need to stretch more because we love to reach – figuratively, that is.

We’re gold medallists in jumping to conclusions, dodging roadblocks, and sprinting home to beat loadshedding. If you think about it, we’re actually a pretty active nation.

The team at Virgin Active have taken a look at the “real” reasons South Africans like to get – or stay – in shape. Here are your top 6.

1.       Beer and braai balance

We love our beer and braai, but to indulge guilt-free, we hit the gym. Nothing says balance like a good workout before (or after) that weekend jol. It’s our way of earning those extra boerewors rolls and cold ones!

2.       Our Springboks are our Holy Grail

We’re sports crazy! South Africans are naturally into playing sports just as much as watching them. It’s in our DNA. Whether it’s rugby, soccer, or cricket, staying fit means we can join in the action ourselves, or keep up with our kids. Have you seen the biceps on those Boks?

3.       Commuter’s workout

We’re a heavy commuting nation, spending hours in traffic or using public transport. To offset all that sitting, South Africans choose to stay active. Stretching at the desk, choosing to take the stairs instead of the lift, or walking for our daily caffeine fix, exercise helps us combat the effects of spending time on the road, keeping our bodies in motion even when our cars are not. And a good session at the gym is really therapeutic.

4.       Outdoor enthusiasts

The good weather we enjoy as a nation makes us really like playing outside. From hiking our nearest parks, hills and mountains, to cycling our roads, exercising outdoors allows us to enjoy the breathtaking beauty South Africa has to offer. After all, you need strong legs for the trails and a sturdy back for the bike! So, South Africans know that when they skip leg day, they’re going to pay the price.

5.       Five-a-side footy

Quick feet are essential for those intense five-a-side soccer matches with friends. It’s a favourite pastime that keeps us agile, active, and ready to take on any challenge, both on and off the field. And nobody likes to be outrun or out-skilled by the youngsters, so the extra 30 minutes on the cardio floor is vital for your ego.

6.       Who doesn’t love a freebie?

South African’s love freebies – and what better way to feel like you’ve conquered the week than earning the free coffee, smoothie, or merch for achieving those goals.

Surely there’s no nation as motivated as South Africans when it comes to staying in shape? Our love for fresh air, sunshine, and the great outdoors is second to none. But even the most dedicated fitness fundis among us can feel the winter chill. That’s why it’s so important to switch things up and make it fun. So embrace indoor workouts and explore new ways to stay active during these colder months. With a fresh approach, you can stay disciplined, have a reason to get out of bed, and keep moving all winter long.
