Follow your heart to the 2026 Cape Town Carnival

Design. Art. Fashion. Music. Dance. Passion. Creativity. This is the pulse of the Mother City. On 21 March, that pulse will move through Green Point as the sixteenth Cape Town Carnival brings the streets to life with colour, sound, and storytelling.

More than 1 500 performers will take to Somerset Street in a bold celebration of creativity, marking one of Cape Town’s most anticipated cultural moments of the year.

A theme rooted in creativity and connection

The 2026 theme, Follow Your HeART, invites Capetonians, South Africans and visitors to celebrate the artists, makers and dreamers who choose passion as their path. It is a call to champion creativity, human connection, and the courage to create something meaningful in a world that often feels uncertain.

Speaking at the official launch, Professor Rachel Jafta, Chair of the Cape Town Carnival Trust, described the event as a joyful response to challenging times.

“There’s so much uncertainty globally, but it’s in moments like these that the spirit of the Carnival shines brightest. This is about community, joy and creating something magnificent. Our performers put their hearts, souls and bodies into this spectacle. When sponsors support the Carnival, they are investing in far more than an event. They are investing in dreams.”

Celebrating the city’s creative champions

This year’s Carnival introduces 12 Champions drawn from Cape Town’s creative community. Each has followed their heart to build a life around their craft and will share their stories as part of the 2026 celebration.

“These Champions have followed their passion and lived it fully,” says Cape Town Carnival CEO Jay Douwes. “Their journeys are meant to inspire others to do the same.”

Among them is singer Zolani Mahola, who credits Cape Town as central to her artistic growth.

“I arrived here from the Eastern Cape 26 years ago, dreaming of performing to thousands,” she says. “Those dreams came true largely because of this city. Being a Carnival Champion here feels deeply meaningful.”

Her fellow Champions include Anslin Gysman, DJ Ready D, Natasha van der Merwe, Rizah Potgieter, Bravo le Roux, Stephen van Eeden, Jemma Fourie, Terry Fortune, Nyaniso Tutu-Burris, Qhayiya Tyali and Dylan Majavie.

A shared space for the city

Geordin Hill-Lewis highlighted the Carnival’s role in bringing people together.

“So many people live in different bubbles. Events like this invite us into a shared space, where different stories walk past you on the streets. You’re seeing an incredible show that took months to create, but you’re also seeing the city itself, side by side.”

More than a parade

Behind the spectacle lies a year-round engine for job creation, skills development and artistic opportunity. The Carnival supports costume makers, performers, designers and technicians, creating pathways into the creative economy.

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde echoed this impact.

“This event changes lives. The Carnival shows the world what we have to offer and why this place is truly special.”

Long-time partner MultiChoice also reaffirmed its support, with Itumeleng Thulare noting the Carnival’s focus on creativity, impact, and the enrichment of lives.
