FlySafair’s R12 Birthday Sale goes live as travellers rush to book flights

4.4k

FlySafair’s highly anticipated Birthday Sale is officially live, with thousands of South Africans flooding online in hopes of securing discounted domestic flights from as little as R12.

The airline released 50 000 one-way seats across its local network from 9am on Tuesday, 6 May 2026, but heavy traffic quickly led to long virtual queues as travellers rushed to the website.

This year’s sale arrives at a time when rising jet fuel prices and increased airline costs are pushing flight prices higher across South Africa, making the discounted fares even more attractive for travellers looking to save.

FlySafair website queues grow as sale launches

To manage demand fairly, FlySafair has once again introduced its virtual waiting room system.

Entry into the booking platform is completely randomised, meaning travellers are selected by chance rather than by how early they joined the queue.

Customers who gain access have 10 minutes to complete their bookings before their session expires.

While waiting, travellers can:

  • search routes using the Birthday Fare Finder
  • play the Flappy Plane game
  • enter competitions to win free flights for two people for six months

The Birthday Sale is available exclusively through FlySafair’s official website.

The airline has also reminded customers to avoid third-party websites and scams by booking only through FlySafair’s verified platforms.

Rising fuel prices add pressure to South African travel

The 2026 FlySafair Birthday Sale comes during one of the sharpest increases in aviation fuel costs seen in recent months.

Jet fuel prices in South Africa recently surged to nearly R30 per litre due to global supply disruptions linked to conflict in the Middle East.

The increase has already forced airlines to introduce temporary fuel surcharges and pushed ticket prices higher across the industry.

This year’s Birthday Sale works slightly differently, with airport taxes and fuel surcharges added separately to the base fare during the booking process.

Despite the added costs, the promotion still offers some of the cheapest domestic flight deals currently available in South Africa.

Why the FlySafair Birthday Sale matters

For many South Africans, the FlySafair Birthday Sale has become one of the country’s biggest annual travel events.

With travel costs rising and demand for affordable flights growing, discounted airline sales continue to attract massive public interest.

The limited R12 fares are expected to sell out quickly as travellers compete for seats across the airline’s domestic routes.
