The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to make history before a ball is even kicked, with FIFA confirming an unprecedented trio of opening ceremonies across its three host nations: Mexico, Canada and the United States.
Rather than a single curtain-raiser, each host country will stage its own dedicated opening celebration ahead of its first group-stage match, creating a festival of football, music and culture across North America. The ceremonies are being produced by renowned Italian creative director Marco Balich, whose company previously helped deliver the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
For South African football fans, the first ceremony carries extra significance, as it will take place immediately before Bafana Bafana’s opening match against Mexico in Mexico City.
