The highly anticipated fifth season of MasterChef South Africa launches on S3 (formerly SABC 3), on Saturday July 13, ready to captivate audiences.
MasterChef South Africa has long been a beacon of culinary inspiration, showcasing the transformation of home cooks into master chefs. With each episode, viewers can feast on creativity, technique, and a deep passion for food. This season promises to be no different, with contestants taking on thrilling challenges and learning from some of the industry’s best chefs to hone their skills and create fine-dining dishes.
The culinary masterpieces are made possible with the freshest ingredients from the Pick n Pay Pantry. This beautiful mini store is modelled after the design of the retailer’s flagship stores, including Pick n Pay Waterstone in Cape Town, Pick n Pay Musgrave in Durban and Pick n Pay Redruth in Johannesburg. The Pantry creates a theatrical experience, placing the freshest ingredients centre stage to inspire contestants and viewers alike.
The MasterChef Pick n Pay Pantry will showcase the fresh produce and product ranges available in-store. This includes a packaging-free zone aimed at reducing plastic waste, available in select stores, and featuring popular PnP private label products that provide essential ingredients for creating delicious meals. The pantry also highlights unique PnP ranges such as Live Well and Let’s Cook, which is inspired by scratch cooking. It will also showcase premium products available in stores, like the Stonebarn Truffle range.
As the season airs, Pick n Pay aims to further bring the show into every household, offering tools and inspiration for customers to try new recipes and techniques in their own kitchens.

MasterChef SA season 5 will premiere on Saturday on S3 at 19h30 and repeat on Sunday at 18h30 on S2 and Wednesday at 18h00 on S3. The finale, announcing the winner, will air on 23 November 2024

Recipe: Creamy Tagliatelle with Crispy Prosciutto
Fast, elegant and simple! You can swap out the crispy prosciutto for pancetta or bacon.
Serves 6 | About 30 minutes
Ingredients:
1 packet (500g) PnP egg tagliatelle
200g sliced prosciutto crudo
2 Tbsp (30g) butter
2 cloves garlic, chopped
2 eggs +2 egg yolks
1cup(250ml) cream
½ cup (80ml)grated parmesan cheese
Salt and milled pepper
For serving:
Handful fresh pea shoots
Blanched asparagus
Parmesan cheese
Method:
- Cook pasta according to packet instructions. Set aside and keep warm.
- Fry prosciutto in a dry pan over medium heat until crispy. (Make sure to fry it in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan.) Remove and set aside.
- Add butter to the same pan and melt over medium heat.
- Fry garlic until fragrant and remove pan from heat.
- Whisk together eggs (including the two egg yolks), cream and cheese. Season.
- Return pasta to pan with garlic and toss to combine.
- Add egg mixture and stir while cooking over low heat until sauce thickens, about 3–5 minutes. Season to taste.
- Serve warm topped with crispy prosciutto, pea shoots, asparagus and a generous grating of parmesan cheese
