Cape Town has its own rhythm shaped by nature, creativity and community. This summer, BIRKENSTOCK folds itself into that rhythm with a considered takeover of The Ladder Café. The Bree Street favourite becomes a sensory space where fashion, food and storytelling converge.
A quiet global icon meets Cape Town’s creative pulse
BIRKENSTOCK has long been known as the world’s most dependable sandal. Over time, it has stepped confidently into fashion culture, becoming a global icon. Its distinctive proportions, design integrity and understated aesthetic now appear in designer collaborations, backstage environments and street style galleries worldwide.
That global momentum meets South Africa’s design language through two anchor collaborations for the residency. Sindiso Khumalo brings her poetic approach to sustainability, heritage and pattern. Jessika Balzer of Project Dyad adds sculptural minimalism to her leather goods. Together, they reinterpret BIRKENSTOCK’s DNA through a local, fashion-focused lens.
A four-day residency that merges fashion, food and community
From Thursday, 4 to Sunday, 7 December, BIRKENSTOCK transforms The Ladder Café into an immersive environment. Part coffee shop, part gallery and part collaborative studio, the residency encourages conversation and creativity.
The First Thursdays launch event on 4 December (5–10 pm) welcomes all. DJ Lungi sets the soundtrack, shaping a sonic palette that mirrors the city’s creative energy.
For the final day, BIRKENSTOCK joins Bree Street Sundays with the Young Urbanists. The open-air activation introduces live music, brand installations and street games. It channels Cape Town’s expressive, communal spirit and celebrates the fashion-meets-street culture that defines the city.
A seasonal menu that complements the residency
Studio H, the culinary studio shaping South Africa’s food culture, adds a seasonal hero item to The Ladder Café menu for all four days. Guests enjoy artisanal ice cream with cobalt-blue accents echoing the residency’s palette.
On Sunday, a designer hotdog pop-up brings ethically sourced sausages, crisp toppings and local condiments to Bree Street. It is an elevated take on street food, aligned with the residency’s creative vision.
Collaboration shaped by Cape Town’s fashion community
Each element of the residency is rooted in the city’s eclectic fashion culture. From footwear and design partnerships to curated retail, the space celebrates form, function and personal style. The setting reflects how people in Cape Town live between the mountain and the sea, the gallery and the street.
Visitors are invited to participate. A limited-time, complimentary laser etching station allows guests to personalise their BIRKENSTOCK pairs. Bring your own sandals or purchase a new pair and add a signature mark.
A space to shape your own story
Open, interactive and alive, the residency invites guests to step inside, linger and create their own summer story.
