St. Denis Medical is bringing a fresh perspective to this beloved genre.

When The Office premiered on the BBC in 2001, it revolutionised the workplace mockumentary genre, sparking a new wave of comic television. From Parks & Recreation to Modern Family, Abbott Elementary, and Arrested Development, the format has inspired countless tributes.

Now, St. Denis Medical is bringing a fresh perspective to this beloved genre. Premiering on M-Net from 19 July at 6 PM, St. Denis Medical is a mix of Scrubs meets The Office, co-created by Superstore writers Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin.

A New Take on the Medical Comedy

Set at the underfunded St. Denis Medical Centre in Oregon, St. Denis Medical follows nurse Alex (Allison Tolman), who is newly promoted to Supervising Nurse in the emergency department.

Alongside a diverse and quirky team of doctors, nurses, and hospital staff, Alex navigates the challenges of working in a chaotic hospital where everyone is just doing their best to keep it together.

The show explores the delicate balance between caring for patients and each other, all while navigating the demanding and often flawed nature of the healthcare system.

Co-creator Spitzer explains that the characters reflect relatable flaws, emphasizing that everyone has their challenges. “Hopefully, people will see it in themselves or someone they love,” he said. “It’s about reminding ourselves that people are flawed. Everybody has stuff, but that doesn’t mean they’re not reliable or trying their best.”

Praise from Critics

Critics have already begun to take note of St. Denis Medical. Variety’s Alison Herman praises the show’s clear-eyed approach to the characters’ struggles, while Episodic Medium celebrates the portrayal of nurses as unsung heroes.

The show combines both humour and the serious challenges medical professionals face daily, blending slapstick with cynical moments.

Showrunner Eric Ledgin adds, “A serious moment is a great way to set up a joke.” The show balances comedy with heartfelt moments, giving viewers an honest look at the challenges faced by healthcare workers, while still providing laughter.

Star-Studded Cast

St. Denis Medical features a talented cast, including Wendi McLendon-Covey, David Alan Grier, Allison Tolman, Josh Lawson, Kahyun Kim, Mekki Leeper, and Kaliko Kauahi.

Where to Watch

St. Denis Medical premieres on M-Net (DStv Channel 101) at 6 PM on Saturday, 19 July. The show will also be available on DStv Stream and DStv Catch Up. For more information, visit the M-Net website and join the conversation on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.
