AS ORDERS FOR MEDIA PERSONALITY SOMIZI MHLONGO’S NEW FASHION LINE, SOMPIRE KIDS, POUR IN, THE FAMOUS CHOREOGRAPHER IS ALREADY PLANNING HIS NEXT VENTURE – HAIR AND MAKEUP. HE SPOKE TO INBOUND SA EDITOR, GAVIN PRINS, ABOUT THE INSPIRATION BEHIND HIS CLOTHING DESIGNS AND EXPANDING HIS EMPIRE.

You are an Idols judge, dancer and singer. Is there anything you can’t do?
Yes! I can’t hate anyone. I have too much love inside of me.

Who designed the clothes?
I designed them myself. I have always been
obsessed with fashion. Sometimes, if I get clothes, I have them altered to suit my style.

How did the clothing line come about?
There have been many celebrities who launched their own clothing line. But I can’t think of anyone who designed a clothing line for children. I love kids and they love me. They think I am a cartoon character. When I meet them, they are so disappointed because they expect me to be in a television box. I saw this gap and Sompire Kids was born.

How did you come up with the name?
The name is derived from my Empire-Sompire. This was to create a legacy and generational wealth for me. I always reinvent myself.

Any other exciting projects we can look forward to?
I love make-up. I do my own make-up and there might be a line coming out soon. Also hair. I love experimenting with hairstyles. You might also see some hair products.

What is the difference between Sompire and other clothing lines?
Sompire Kids encourages kids to be themselves. It encourages boldness. It mainly revolves around positivity, loving themselves, and being confident enough to be who they truly are. Hence the slogan, “Brave enough to be yourself”.

You are a man known to enjoy the finer things in life, yet the clothing line’s prices are quite low. Tell us why?
This is a passion project, not something I want to make millions from. It is for my fans. Whether you are a rich kid, middle class, or poor, everyone must wear Sompire because they feel good in it. When they wear Sompire, they must feel valued, worthy, and successful. Every child deserves to feel good. IB
