De Krans named Klein Karoo Champion Private Cellar in 2024

1.4k

De Krans Wines, situated in Calitzdorp in the Klein Karoo region, is a must-stop destination along the picturesque Route 62. With Calitzdorp being the port-style wine capital of South Africa, De Krans is no stranger to producing quality fortified wines, with their flagship, the Cape Vintage Reserve, having been awarded a 5-star rating in the Platter’s Wine Guide no less than 15 times. Although traditionally known mainly for their port-style wines,

De Krans Wines is also a market leader when it comes to the Moscato category, having produced the first white Moscato Perlé in South Africa in 2012. This popular range now consists of a Premium White Moscato Perlé, Premium Rosé Moscato Perlé and the Premium Red Moscato Perlé. Moscato as a style of wine is deliciously refreshing, natural sweet (made of Muscadel and Hanepoot grapes), and slightly sparkling, with a low alcohol of 9%.

In addition to the Port-style Range and Premium Moscato Range, the Classic Varietal Range is made from classic grape varietals with unique winemaking methods implemented, indicated by the names of the wines: Free Run Chenin Blanc, Wild Ferment Chardonnay, Dry Pinotage Rosé, and Basket Press Cabernet Sauvignon. De Krans also produced the first Premium Port-style and Tonic in South Africa – a ready-to-drink, premixed, sparkling cocktail, which boasts delicious fruit flavours like granadilla, citrus, pineapple and tonic flavouring.

When visiting the tasting room, you will have the opportunity to taste the wide variety of award-winning and unique wines, and stock up on your favourites. Browse through our Deli stocked with local products (such as rusks, olive oil, preserves, achar etc.) or enjoy breakfast, lunch or a cheese platter at our Bistro with the option of inside seating or outside seating under a beautiful, lush green vineyard trellis. Want to stretch your legs? Enjoy a stroll through the vineyards and enjoy the children’s play area. We are also a dog-friendly destination (just remember to bring along a leash).

De Krans Wines once again hosts their annual Hanepoot picking where you can visit the farm to pick your own grapes at R11 per kilogram. Picking has already started and will continue until 9 March, or as long as grapes last. Bring your own box, basket, or cooler bag and remember a sun hat and sunscreen. Picking is seven days a week from 8am – 4pm. The second annual Hanepoot Trail Run will also take place on 22 February 2025. For more information visit www.jakhalsevents.co.za. De Krans Wines is open seven days a week with the trading hours as follows: Bistro: Mondays – Sundays 10am – 4pm (kitchen closes at 3.30pm). Tasting room: Mondays – Saturdays 9am – 4.30pm, Sundays 9am – 4pm.
