Celebrate 30 years of democracy at Unity On The Square festival in Cape Town this December.

Cape Town is set to come alive this December as the iconic Unity On The Square music festival returns for its fourth edition, marking a significant milestone – 30 years of democracy in South Africa. Scheduled for Monday, 16 December 2024, at the historic Greenmarket Square, this year’s event promises to be a vibrant celebration of the nation’s progress and resilience through music, culture, and unity.
The theme for the festival, “30 Years of Democracy,” encapsulates the profound meaning behind this anniversary. The event aims to bring together individuals from all walks of life to reflect on South Africa’s journey while looking forward to an inclusive and hopeful future.
“This year’s festival is a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come, giving us a chance to unite in celebration of our shared story. Unity On The Square has become a significant part of Cape Town’s cultural calendar,” festival director and headline act Loukmaan Adams told Inbound SA. “The energy of this festival continues to embody the spirit of reconciliation and joy. I’m extremely excited about producing this year’s celebration – it’s all about creating unforgettable moments that truly reflect our vibrant culture.”
Attendees can expect an electrifying line-up featuring Loukmaan alongside his brother Emo Adams, the multi-talented rapper Youngsta CPT, vocal sensation Salome, and the dynamic Tashreeq De Villiers, also known as TDV. The fan-favourite group, The Temple Boys, will also take to the stage, setting the scene for an unforgettable musical experience. With additional artist announcements forthcoming, festival-goers will surely have plenty to look forward to.
In a heartfelt gesture to commemorate this significant occasion, tickets are being offered at an extraordinary once-off price of R30.
Loukmaan adds: “This move is not just a thank you to our loyal attendees, but also an open invitation to newcomers who wish to partake in this celebration of unity and culture.”
As the sun sets, guests will be treated to a family-friendly atmosphere, with local food stalls showcasing the diverse flavours of Cape Town, alongside handmade artisan products that provide a true taste of the Mother City. From delectable local favourites to unique crafts, the offerings will complement the festive spirit and showcase the richness of the city’s cultural heritage.
The festival is powered by the City of Cape Town, the National Arts Council, and the Western Cape Government. Alderman JP Smith, the Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, stated: “Greenmarket Square is one of the oldest public spaces in the country and has hosted iconic events over the years. Unity On The Square exemplifies how music can unify us as we gather for a common purpose.”
Scheduled to take place on Reconciliation Day, Unity On The Square serves as a poignant reminder of South Africa’s journey towards unity and the role of music and culture in fostering togetherness.
Loukmaan concludes: “Unity is all about coming together despite our differences – whether that’s through culture, background, or experiences – and finding strength in what makes us unique yet connected.”
