Tributes have been pouring in for the iconic actress Crystal-Donna Roberts, who passed away on Thursday, 6 March. The 41-year-old film industry heavyweight fought a brave battle with cancer and died peacefully in her sleep.
Crystal-Donna’s filmography reflects her deep commitment to her craft, with standout roles in critically acclaimed films such as The Endless River (2015) and the award-winning Krotoa (2017). Her powerful portrayal in Krotoa not only earned her the prestigious South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for Best Actress in a Feature Film in 2018 but also cemented her status as a leading figure in the South African film industry. Her performances resonated widely, showcasing an authenticity that drew viewers into the depths of her characters.
Beyond her professional acclaim, Crystal-Donna was a beacon of hope as a breast cancer survivor. Known for her resilience, she bravely shared her personal journey with cancer, offering inspiration and support to many facing similar challenges. Her openness made her a source of strength—not just for those undergoing treatment but also for countless others who admired her courage and tenacity.
In October 2024, Crystal hosted a cancer awareness session at Sharon Assembly of God Church in Cape Town, where she honoured survivors of the disease. A cancer survivor at the time, she was in remission and was also honoured with a special medal for her bravery. She spoke about her journey and participated in a panel discussion with fellow survivors and those still fighting cancer.
Sadly, the illness later returned, and four months later, the brave fighter lost her battle.
