Throwback Cinema is back for April

If you’ve ever thought, “They just don’t make movies like they used to,” then we’ve got great news for you! Ster-Kinekor’s Throwback Cinema is bringing some absolute bangers back to the big screen this April – and the best part? Tickets are only R50. This month’s line-up is packed with milestone anniversaries, proving that these classics have stood the test of time.

Shrek (from 4 April)

It’s big, it’s green, and it’s still one of the funniest animations ever made. Shrek is back! Whether you watched it in 2001 or you’re introducing the little ones to the magic of an ogre with layers (like an onion, remember?), this is the perfect school holiday treat. Featuring a voice cast of legends including Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and John Lithgow – this is a fairytale like no other. Prepare to laugh, cry, and maybe even sing along to Smash Mouth’s ‘All Star’ one more time.

The Social Network (from 11 April)

Before we were all doom-scrolling and sharing memes, Facebook was just a college experiment. David Fincher’s The Social Network turns 15 this year, and honestly, it’s aged like fine wine (unlike some of the things people posted on Facebook in 2009). Jesse Eisenberg nails it as Mark Zuckerberg, while Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake bring the drama. It’s a must-watch if you want to see how the biggest social media platform in the world got its start – and how many people got burned along the way. You don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies!

Madagascar (from 18 April)

Can you believe it’s been 20 years since Alex the lion and his crew escaped the zoo and accidentally landed in Madagascar? Feels like yesterday! With a cast featuring Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Sacha Baron Cohen (as the unforgettable King Julien), this animated classic is pure joy. Whether you’re revisiting it for nostalgia or seeing it for the first time, it’s time to move it, move it – to the cinema, that is.

Jumanji (from 25 April)

The original Jumanji is turning 30! Robin Williams, Kirsten Dunst, and a board game that literally unleashes jungle mayhem? Iconic. If you only know Jumanji from The Rock and Kevin Hart’s version, do yourself a favour and watch the OG. This one is packed with adventure, magic, and some genuinely terrifying moments (that stampede scene? Nightmare fuel!). Roll the dice and take the risk – this is one game worth playing.

Bonus Throwbacks – only at Rosebank Nouveau

For the classic cinema buffs, three legendary films from the 1960s are making a return at Rosebank Nouveau in Johannesburg. Catch Doctor Zhivago (4 April), Lawrence of Arabia (18 April), and The Great Escape (25 April). These are old-school epics in all their glory – perfect for those who like their movies long, dramatic, and Oscar-laden.
