Cape Town was truly spoilt on Saturday, 28 June 2025, as the legendary jazz-funk group Shakatak lit up the stage with a sold-out concert at GrandWest’s Grand Arena.
The iconic English band, composed of Jill Saward (lead vocals), Bill Sharpe (keyboards), Keith Winter (guitar), George Anderson (bass) and Roger Odell (drums), has long held a special place in the hearts of local fans. Their deep affection for the Mother City even inspired their track “Cape Town”, a melodic tribute to a city that has welcomed them time and again.

The evening began on a high note with the phenomenal Leonie Roux and her band ELIXIR. With undeniable stage presence and Leonie’s silky, soulful vocals, they captivated the audience from the first note. A particularly heartfelt moment came when she invited a group of gifted young performers to join her on stage. Their harmonies were moving and left a lasting impression, creating a sense of unity and celebration.

When Shakatak finally took the spotlight, the atmosphere shifted buzzing with the kind of magnetic energy only a seasoned group can conjure. Even after 45 years, their seamless blend of jazz, funk, and pop was delivered with finesse, flair, and infectious joy. That moment took me back to my younger days, where my sister and I would sing in front of the mirror, pretending to be part of the group.

For both longtime fans and newcomers, the night wasn’t just a concert but a multi-generational musical experience that will linger long after the final chord.
Kudos to the organiser and the entire team for making such a timeless night possible.
