Elderly Couple Found Murdered in Kruger National Park in Unprecedented Attack

2.9k

An elderly South African couple has been found murdered in the northern section of Kruger National Park in what authorities describe as an unprecedented security incident inside the park’s century-long history.

The victims, Ernst Marais, 71, and Dina Marais, 73, from Mossel Bay, were discovered dead on Friday, 22 May 2026, after going missing earlier in the week.

Couple disappeared after visit to Pafuri picnic site

According to reports, the couple failed to return to their camp on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, after travelling to the Pafuri picnic site in the far north of the park.

Their bodies were later discovered by other tourists floating at Crooks’ Corner, where the Levubu and Limpopo rivers meet near the borders of South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

Authorities say both victims suffered severe stab wounds and their hands were reportedly bound.

Vehicle stolen as police launch murder investigation

The couple’s green Ford Ranger double cab bakkie was stolen and remains missing.

Trackers investigating the scene reportedly discovered tyre tracks leading out of the park and into neighbouring Mozambique, raising suspicions the attackers may have fled across the border.

A prevailing theory suggests the couple may have accidentally encountered poachers operating within the park.

The South African Police Service in Limpopo has launched a large-scale manhunt for suspects linked to the murders and hijacking.

Anyone with information has been urged to contact Lieutenant Colonel Rodney Ndou on 082 807 2666.

First visitor murders in Kruger National Park history

Willie Aucamp, Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, confirmed the incident marks the first time visitors have been murdered inside Kruger National Park since its establishment more than 100 years ago.

The attack has sent shockwaves through South Africa’s tourism and conservation sectors, given the park’s international reputation as one of Africa’s premier wildlife destinations.

SANParks strengthens security in northern Kruger

SANParks has responded by deploying additional park rangers and increasing surveillance in the remote Nxanatseni North Region.

Security measures now reportedly include:

  • additional ranger patrols
  • upgraded aerial surveillance
  • enhanced monitoring technology
  • intensified border tracking operations

Authorities are also working alongside law enforcement agencies as investigations continue.

Concerns over poaching and border crime

The northern region of Kruger National Park has long faced challenges linked to:

  • cross-border poaching
  • illegal wildlife trafficking
  • organised criminal syndicates

The park shares borders with both Mozambique and Zimbabwe, creating ongoing security complexities in remote areas.

Experts say poaching networks operating near the park have become increasingly sophisticated over recent years.

Tourism industry watches closely

The incident is likely to raise renewed concerns around tourism safety and anti-poaching operations within protected conservation areas.

Kruger National Park remains one of South Africa’s biggest tourism attractions, drawing millions of local and international visitors annually.

Authorities have stressed that investigations are ongoing and security operations have already been strengthened in affected regions of the park.

The bottom line

The murder of Ernst and Dina Marais marks a tragic and unprecedented moment in the history of Kruger National Park.

As police intensify their cross-border investigation, the incident is placing renewed focus on security challenges facing conservation areas and the growing threat posed by organised wildlife crime syndicates operating in the region.
