The 12th edition of the Investec Cape Town Art Fair, set to take place from 21 to 23 February at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, promises a vibrant fusion of art, culture, and interactive experiences.
With 124 exhibitors from Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America – including a record-breaking 30 first-time participants – the fair stands proud as Africa’s largest and only international contemporary art fair.
Laura Vincenti, Director of the Investec Cape Town Art Fair, expresses the team’s ambitious vision for the event: “We’re committed to pushing the boundaries of what an art fair can be, continuing to innovate and elevate our position on the global art stage.”
This year’s curatorial theme, PLAY, invites participants to question and unpack the conceptual possibilities of art, redefining its role as an interactive and transformative experience focused on artistic process and experimentation.
The invitation to PLAY is echoed in various facets of the fair, presenting visitors with immersive ways to engage with art:
Ways to embrace PLAY at the fair
First-time visitors may feel daunted by the vast array of art on display. The fair encourages newcomers to explore at their own pace, with the Galleries and Special Projects Manager, Mia Louw, suggesting a leisurely experience with guided art walks, thought-provoking talks, and tantalising local cuisine from vendors like Zuney and The Khaya Pizza Joint. Engaging with artists presents an opportunity to deepen one’s understanding of their work.
This year’s curated sections offer unique interpretations of the theme. Artists like Geena Wilkinson and Takeshi Matsugami present playful visuals that blend nostalgia and comfort, inviting commentary on societal constructs through their works. Each piece echoes the multifaceted nature of creativity, curiosity, and action – a thrilling call to all to engage in the spirit of PLAY.
The fair complements its exhibits with guided art walks and a stimulating talks programme curated by Art School Africa. Engaging discussions will delve into topics such as the impact of digital media and the role of art in global brand collaborations. Esteemed voices from the industry will illuminate how contemporary African art redefines cultural narratives.
Art across the city
Beyond the fair’s confines, art lovers can partake in citywide activations, featuring exclusive events in local museums and galleries, allowing for deeper interactions with art. It’s a rare opportunity for guests to experience Cape Town’s extensive artistic offerings in a relaxed atmosphere.
With dedicated sections showcasing emerging galleries, limited-edition prints, and unique retail opportunities from brands like Pichulik and Nuru, the fair is a hub of creativity and discovery.
So, whether it’s the enticing panel discussions, immersive exhibitions, or simply soaking up the electric atmosphere, the Investec Cape Town Art Fair invites all to dive into a world where every moment is an opportunity to PLAY.
