Immerse yourself in Tharien Smith’s evocative paintings on display in the heart of Cape Town.

197

Mixed-media artist Tharien Smith draws inspiration from her explorations of tidal pools, ponds and swimming pools. She captures the dazzling interplay of light, shadow and movement within these underwater worlds, translating them into intricate, layered artworks.

Water Memoirs, her latest collection, presented by House Union Block, an artist career-development programme of Spier Arts Trust (SAT), opens in February at Sisonke Gallery. Each artwork reflects Smith’s deep passion for beauty and the seamless connection between art and design, while conveying a timely message urging viewers to protect the environment rather than harm it.

‘Through my work, I aim to raise environmental awareness by incorporating discarded, “trashy” elements into my paintings, often hidden within vibrant colours and captivating imagery,’ she says. ‘I believe nature is a constant reminder to reconnect with the cosmos, tune into its frequencies and align with our true selves. My art emphasises the urgency of change, calling for reflection, action and, above all, a deeper respect for the life-sustaining waters that bind us all.’

For the past seven years, Smith has fully embraced her artistic vision, embarking on a personal journey as both artist and textile designer. Her work continues to evolve, gaining recognition for its innovative approach and exquisite pieces across various mediums, including acrylic paint and textiles.

Her creative journey began at Tshwane University of Technology, where she discovered her passion for textiles and surface design. After earning her degree, she entered the corporate creative sector, gaining diverse experience designing a wide range of products, from furnishings and fashion to graphics and ceramic tiles.

A pivotal moment saw Smith selected as one of four artists to participate annually in Nando’s Creative Exchange, the flagship programme of the Nando’s Art Initiative, in 2023. Artists receive mentorship, curatorial input, media profiling and art materials sponsorship and culminated in a group exhibition at the RMB Latitudes Art Fair in Johannesburg.

Water Memoirs is Smith’s first solo exhibition since this engagement. Viewers are invited  into an ethereal world shaped by the hypnotic power of water, where innocence and beauty blend in delicate harmony, and light and dark intertwine. This painting series, on sale during the show, offers a chance to experience the haunting allure and peaceful calm of nature’s fluid realm.
