The Two Oceans Aquarium strives for conservation contribution with upcoming beach cleanup

START The Two Oceans Aquarium heads to Sunrise Beach in Muizenberg on 15 March to do their bit for conservation education. This is the perfect opportunity for families to come together and learn about the dangers of plastic pollution and the importance of conservation awareness for biodiversity.

“Our Trash Bash cleanup events are always well attended by young people and their families. Often, we find that children encourage their parents to join these fun beach cleanup events and create awareness around ocean conservation. It is heartening to witness young people’s enthusiasm for the environment,” said Phumza Jongihlathi from the Two Oceans Aquarium.

Beach cleanups are an important way to draw people together to remove pollution from marine environments. The Two Oceans Aquarium believes strongly in the awareness-raising role of the Trash Bash events in making a difference.

“We have reached the halfway point of the United Nations Ocean Decade. This global initiative aims to achieve ocean wellness through the mission, ‘science we need for the ocean we want.’ The Two Oceans Aquarium is taking this call to action seriously – programmes like the Trash Bash beach cleanup amplify the coming together of science, people, and the ocean for a difference,” said Heather Wares, Communications Manager at the Two Oceans Aquarium.

Situated within the False Bay Hope Spot (an initiative driven by Mission Blue and its legendary founder, Dr Sylvia Earle), Sunrise Beach is the perfect location to host a beach cleanup for the good of the ocean.

One of the major benefits of being part of Mission Blue’s Hope Spot Network is the focus on taking action to support ocean health for biodiversity growth and maintenance. Creating awareness of ocean health as an issue ensures a growing community of people taking steps to protect the biodiversity of marine areas such as False Bay. “Be a part of this exciting day out as we come together as a community to protect the precious biodiversity of our oceans. Let’s stop the cycle of pollution and remove litter from our beaches before it endangers the marine wildlife of False Bay,” said Helen Lockhart, Conservation and Sustainability Manager at the Two Oceans Aquarium.
