It is Dezemba and time for a much-needed breather to celebrate the year and connect with friends, family and loved ones. Cape Town brings all the classic summer rhythms – lighting the braai, beach days, reunions with family from afar and watching a Galileo movie under the stars.

The festive period line-up of movie screenings will be a hit with kids, adults, tourists and locals. Perfect for romantic dates, birthday celebrations, catch-ups with friends or year-end parties, The Galileo offers a unique experience where you can enjoy a picnic along with a nostalgic film in some of Cape Town and the Cape Winelands’ most scenic locations.

Festive films for all

From Monday, 15 December to Thursday, 25 December, The Galileo Open Air Cinema will screen eight festive-themed films in ten days. Expect favourites such as The Holiday, Home Alone, Die Hard and Elf.

Celebrate Christmas Eve and Day with special shows

Kirstenbosch Garden hosts this year’s Christmas-themed screenings. The Christmas Chronicles will screen on Wednesday, 24 December, and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation on Thursday, 25 December. For R300 per adult and R225 per child, tickets include free goodies such as popcorn, a Christmas hat and festive treats. Booking early is recommended.

End the school year with a roaring experience

Families can kick off the school holidays with outdoor screenings across iconic venues. The festive line-up starts with Happy Feet at Kirstenbosch Garden on 10 December, followed by School of Rock at the Croquet Lawn at the V&A Waterfront on 11 December. On Sunday, 14 December, The Galileo debuts its new venue at Alphen Market with The Greatest Showman, along with more family favourites throughout the season.

Guests can pack a picnic or enjoy treats from onsite vendors offering sweets, wraps, nachos, pizza and burgers. The full holiday schedule features a wide selection of family-friendly films.

Welcoming back old friends

This season, The Galileo returns to Allée Bleue on 20 December with The Holiday, and to Rhebokskloof on 24 January with Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

Allée Bleue in Franschhoek, one of the oldest estates in the summer rotation, brings heritage and character to the line-up. Near Paarl, Rhebokskloof Estate returns with its newly opened restaurant. Guests will also revisit wine farms such as Blaauwklippen, Lourensford and Plaisir for award-winning wines paired with open-air movie nights.

Doors open at 6 PM on weekdays and 5 PM on weekends. Movies begin after sunset.
